Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do I go for Zipps?

I have been weighing up options on getting some good wheels for a bit of racing and weekly TTing for when my leg gets better.

I thought I had decided on Zipp 404/808 tubs but having done a search on here and looking at some of the threads (most of which end up in 'disagreements' about non wheel matters) I'm now not so sure.

Due to the unique way these wheels will be financed (in the UK we have a govt. incentive to buy bikes and get loads of wonga off) I am tied to my LBS so t'interweb companies are a non-starter.

They can get hold of most factory wheels though.

I like the look of the Edge wheels but the distributor in the UK doesn't even mention them on their website.

Other possibilities are Reynolds Assaults for something heavier but cheaper or the Dura Ace tubs for something heavier but supposedly very sturdy and reliable.

Your thoughts please?

Besides the Zipps you could look into some of the other companies like Blackwell or Hed. Their stuff may be cheaper.

How's the leg coming along?

Hi mate, leg is coming on steadily ta! (Somehow managed a PB in a club 10 mile TT last month...)

Can't get hold of Blackwells here, Hed distributor was useless last time I tried to get the Ardennes (ended up with DA carbon laminate clinchers) but may give them a go again...

Can't get the Neuvations here. Planet X do a similarly priced wheel though but can't get those through my scheme

Zipps, while not the cheapest wheel, are pretty much the gold standard for aero wheels. (setting aside uber expensive wheels) The ones I've had have been durable, and Zipp's customer service was good the one time I did have a problem.

If you can get a discount on them, I would definitely go with the Zipps.

You could consider Soul. Their new full carbon clinchers are pretty light, and they have 50mm and 85mm(?) versions.

Also cheap, under $1200 shipped to the US, I would imagine similar to Merry ol' England.

edit: just read the OP again, noticed the government part. So nevermind.

I'm a big fan of Reynolds wheels.

What kind of discount are you talking? I'm a Brit abroad so I'm wondering how the pricing (with discount) compares. Or is it through a tax deduction/reduction?

Tax reduction (1000 quid becomes about 620 through VAT reduction and pre income tax salary sacrifice).

I will be getting a brand new pair of Zipps for about 900 quid as opposed to a full retail of 1500, for those in the US, that would be 1510 dollars instead of 2515...

That's not bad! Reynolds are also good but I dont' think they do anything like the 404/808 combo.

What made you not want to do 808/808? With that said, the 404/808 combo is going to be very nice...

An extra 100 quid and extra weight...

To be honest it's what the guys at the shop suggested would be best when I told them what riding I did.

They said that an 808 would give no extra benefit over the 404 on the two mile ride to the coffee shop...

Get the WH7850 C50 TU wheels. These are a quite astonishing wheelset as far as I am concerned. They just go! Stiffness is incredible, as is the quality of finish My pair weighs in at 1421 grams.

Nice... are you doing the gluing yourself or having the shop do it?

I've got the Easton Ascent II wheels, which weigh in at 1419g. I wonder if your numbers are correct, because honestly your wheels look so much lighter and faster than mine.

Nice wheels man. I read a review about them and they seem to be solid!

We also need pics of the on the bike!
totally agree, need to see the bike/wheel combo

I have a question about some of the light weight wheel sets. I have read that if you are doing a lot of hills involving hard braking that they are not a very good investment. Is that true.

Bike pics soon.

I'm fitting the tubs myself.

I liked the DA wheels but they are 800 dollars more than I got the Zipps for here in the uk! :O

The DA weight is correct.

They will mainly be used for TTs and flattish RRs.

Why am I writing in bullet point fashion?
