With bullet-proof vest secured, I'll sat this: Fox News is the only main-stream media outlet that consistently presents both sides of the issues. Fair and balanced! Why is it that cyclists tend to lean to the left politically? My other passion, aviation, is the exact opposite (with the exctption of Tom Daschle). Don't know why that is either. It could be said that no news is unbiased. i.e. what you choose to show and not show is bias in itself. I listen mostly to the BBC though. They seem to do a good job at telling me what happened and nothing more. |
"It is a sport if some people are afraid to try it"-me
golfing must not be a sport then baseball involes an object flying towards your face at ninety miles per hour-sport cause im scared PS. anyone who thinks that cycling does not require coordination has never tried clipless pedal lol |

Perhaps this little illustration will make all of you feel better -- a comparison between a professional cyclist and a professional football player.

There can be no doubt that when physical condition, strength, endurance, ability to withstand pain, and, when you get right down to it, athelticism, cyclists are the best athletes in the world.
I have even had one guy at work argue that NASCAR drivers were athletes! I said what about jockeys? He said, sure. There is no accounting for the stupidity of the uninformed. |

I like to tell NASCAR fans that. It makes them apoplectic. |

Running is the HARDEST sport that I have ever tried, because it is purely a training sport. Most sports you are naturally talented at, but in running you can be naturally talented and still suck because you have a horrible work ethic. In running you can't coast, or stop and take a break if you want to be good. Runners hard work also carrys over into their school work, for example our high school cross country teams top 5 guys all have 4.0's except one, who has like a 3.5. So, running is in fact a sport just like cycling Most sports you are naturally talented at, but in running you can be naturally talented and still suck because you have a horrible work ethic. |

Cheers to the previous poster.... I missed this little gem of a post until he replied to it! "because it is purely a training sport" - ?!? "in running you can be naturally talented and still suck because you have a horrible work ethic" - wow running is like, so unique.... :D "in running you can't coast, or stop and take a break if you want to be good" - wow, more uniqueness...! "Runners hard work also carrys over into their school work" - Yeah, I can see how pounding the streets will help with trigonometry. Sir, you have brightened up my night with your... um, words. Cheers! |
The guy is obviously being satirical. I've often wondered about this whole "cyclists aren't athletes" when I see photos of golfer John Daly with his big fat stomach! I agree with him there, but I can't see lumping cyclists with golfers and bowlers. I'd like to see any one of them ride a bike up Mont Ventoux. John Daly would die of a coronary!

I thought the column was marginally funny. While we're defending cycling from those who don't understand I don't see how we can attack any sports. I mean how many of you have tried driving a nascar car. My speculation tells me that it doesn't require the greatest strength or endurance but it requires unflinching concentration for a really long time, nerves of steel, and lightning reflexes. Then you have say a hockey goalie, requires unflinching concentration for a really long time, nerves of steel, and lightning reflexes. It is not our place to say what is a sport and what is not a sport, I don't think I could even hit a golf ball, much less direct it towards a little hole 400 yards away.
About running or cycling or other endurance events requiring more training, I know soccer players who would go to school, play soccer all of lunch, or between classes, on the way to and from school, before school and after. We're talking like 6 hours a day, and at home they'd do ball drills. They'd also do the type of training that you'd do for running a 100m dash and a 3200m run, and they'd be good at both 11 point and sub 10 minutes. |
sport (spôrt, sprt)
n. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively. Cycling is the definition of competition, and a sport with such background has definately aquired some customs along the way. That loser has lost all credability with his article. |

i find it funny how a "sports expert" who watches baseball all day could comment so much about cycling.... :D

Bowling is also a sport.. Have you tried bowling for 8 hours a day, 6 days a week? -- Bowlers do practice -- and it does not "necessarily" involve beer.. I don't think even lance could do it... :D bowlers need the uppers..;):D i think.. I believe you can lump cyclists w/ bowlers and golfers.. they're all athletes :) |
Can we all differentiate between athlete and sportsman/woman?
Thank you. The best person in the world at darts is a top class sportsman. He could fire a dart through the eye of a needle at 20 paces. He's at least 260lbs. An athlete, he is not. |
