This makes me SICK!!

Dayn Perry, the authour of this article should be fired on the spot. Him making reference to Lance Armstrong, one of, if not the most dominating figure in the sporting world today as "Not concidered a real athelete" is truley appalling!
Perry also states that the "the only athletic ability entailed [in cycling] involves not falling off the freaking bike — something most riders fail at with alarming frequency." Dayn also states that "cycling's unassailable pinnacle consists of hanging out with French people while wearing a canary-yellow shirt."

It amazes me how little this so-called "sports expert" knows about cycling. Mabey he should actually watch a race, see these half human, half machine riders climb, attack and sprint. Mabey he should actually do some research before he decides to write an article on something of this nature. Every rider in the pro peleton has dedicated their lives to the sport, becoming, what the definition of athelete should be!

"Cycling requires no hand-eye coordination..." What a f**king dumba**!

Raiyn 07-07-04 03:16 PM

I've said it before I'll say it again. Fox networks be it FoxNews, FoxSports, or FoxToilet Paper has little use to me.

Nam 07-07-04 03:21 PM

find his email and we mass emailing him to let him know how ******** he is :D.

Brillig 07-07-04 03:22 PM

He's trying to write a "humorous" column. He missed the mark, but getting upset about that is a waste of energy.

In the end, who is it going to hurt?

Go easy everyone, it's joke. It's called satire.

temp1 07-07-04 03:56 PM

I thought the slideshow was hysterical. Lighten up people!!!!!

Thylacine 07-07-04 04:10 PM

Satire and Sarcasm should be a mandatory subject in American schools.

Nelf 07-07-04 04:16 PM

I'm not finding the satire or sarcasm in there.

belfast-biker 07-07-04 04:28 PM

Fox News!

I thought it was quite funny actually. I never take anything I read, especially off the Internet and especially from a network like FOX too seriously.

It happens every year, some bonehead writes an article slamming pro cycling, and it usually comes out around the time the Tour is on. It's done just to get our proverbial spandex in a knot.

My proverbial chamois is up my butt and it's getting higher...

Dayn Perry would probably get worn out if he tried driving as far as the tour riders are riding this month, espescially if he had to use turn signals every time he changed directions.

KennethToronto 07-07-04 05:13 PM

this happens every year

i'm not going to bother reading it...because if it's satire, it's probably poorly executed. If it's not, then all the more reason to ignore it.

A sports columnist for the Washington Times, Tom Knott, wrote a silly article about Lance today, saying he is riding under suspicion of drug abuse, when it is obvious he hasn't even read the book. He makes several other stupid remarks that show him to be the cretin he is. His other columns have the same ignorant ring.

There is no accounting for some people. They hate what they don't understand or hate those who can do things that they cannot. I doubt that Tom Knott or Dayn Perry could keep up with me for 10 minutes, much less my normal 2 hour, 30 mile ride, and I'm nearly 60 years old.

All these guys are trying to do is spark letters and e-mails. They can then wave them at their editors as evidence people are reading their screed.

I read Knott's crap, and, at first, was PO'd and thought about responding, but then thought, why give the moron the satisfaction?

 I find it funny, but it does make me wonder about other athletes...

Skiers: They stand on two skinny boards, then try to slide down a snow-covered hill on them without falling.

Runners: They try to jog really fast... without tripping.

Baseball players: They primarily stand and sit for hours... and occasionally try to catch, throw or hit a ball (something they fail at with alarming frequency).

Anyway, if cycling isn't athletic, I don't know what is. It obviously involves strength, endurance, balance and coordination... all of which require athletic ability.

SteveE 07-07-04 06:45 PM

TrekRider,

You should try reading the Washington Post, instead! ;)

Boomer 07-07-04 06:54 PM

There appears to be this propensity for those who don't cycle in the U.S. to claim that cyclists are not athletes. Their ignorance may be excusable since cycling is not a major sport here such as baseball, football, basketball and hockey. I wonder what is the opinion in Europe? Do they consider cyclist to be athletes? Is cycling a sport to them or an activity?

RegularGuy 07-07-04 07:12 PM

Yawn.

Obvious attempt at humor. Moderately amusing.

The "Lance Tracker" article titled "Lance roars into overall lead" is more misleading. Should Mr. Armstrong surrender the yellow jersey tomorrow, the people who know nothing of the race save that which they learn from Fox will be sorely disappointed, believing the Great American Wunderkind is *gasp!* losing!

Maybe he should simply be put on a bike and see what he can do ...
Then he might realize what athletic abilities cyclists have.

athens77 07-07-04 07:51 PM

You guys should consult the US Soccer fans over on bigsoccer.com on how to over react to a sports writer. They have got people over there who have been perfecting their knee jerk since the 70's ;)

The people that diss running are the same lazy people that diss cycling. I'm a long distance runner, and I'd like to see you run 150+ miles a week, like some of the people I know. Running is the HARDEST sport that I have ever tried, because it is purely a training sport. Most sports you are naturally talented at, but in running you can be naturally talented and still suck because you have a horrible work ethic. In running you can't coast, or stop and take a break if you want to be good. Runners hard work also carrys over into their school work, for example our high school cross country teams top 5 guys all have 4.0's except one, who has like a 3.5. So, running is in fact a sport just like cycling.

Yikes. Sorry if my humor didn't translate well over the web. My bad, I should be more careful about that. I didn't mean it as a jab against the sports I mentioned... I was just just using them as examples of how these other very athletic activities can be made to sound less than what they are (emphasizing the obsurdity of doing so... like how it's obsurd to say cyclists aren't athletes. It's also very obsurd to say runners aren't athletes). When I don't cycle I jog, and I used to run track in high school. Yes, it definitely is a sport, and an extremely competitive/challenging one at that! I have nothing but admiration and respect for those who push themselves, and excell on the track (or off!). One of these days I plan to run a marathon, but will have to do some serious training first!
