On my heavy mountain bike on crushed gravel path (with urban tires) I average about 13-15mph. On my road bike, which I just started riding again recently after 15 years, I was averaging around 17-19 mph. I'm a noob just getting back into shape, so take it fwiw.

I am a fat bastard on a entry level mountain bike - a Raleigh m20. This is my 2nd year of doing anything remotely resembling cycling vs. just riding around.
I have a 17 mile ride that I've been doing 3 to 5 times week for a few months now. I average right around 13mph.
Part of that I'm sure is the bike - its not exactly light nor does it let me get very aero and the front suspension fork tends to result in some bobbing up and down if my cadence gets above 95 or so. I also have added a rack, trunk bag, bar ends, lights, etc and tend to carry more crap than I should in the trunk bag but I figure the extra weight gives me a better work out. One change I would recommend if you are going to do any substantial road riding on a MTB is to swap out the knobbies for some smoother tread tires. I ended up with 1.5" serfas drifters and I am pretty happy with them.
The other part of it is - I'm a fat bastard - 40yrs old,6'2" and 255lbs and about as aerodynamic as a sheet of plywood on my bike.
I am going to reward myself with a road bike if I can drop 30lbs by Dec. I'm down from 265 right now so slowly but surely.
I have been focusing on keeping my heart rate around 160 and my cadence around 80 or higher - not so much emphasis on speed - though naturally I keep an eye on it.
Here's the ride on motionbased with some details like cadence, speed, etc.
The biggest speed killers for me are hills - there are only 2 bridges I cross and I can't really benefit from the downhill aspect of them because there is traffic at the bottom and the wind. Lots of wind by the beach - it always seems like its in my face - at least that's my excuse for being slow and I'm sticking to it.
Oh - my biggest motivation for wanting to get a road bike is to go faster
About 2 weeks ago around the half way point of my ride I saw a large guy - like 3 bills easy, maybe even 330 - on a road bike. About 2 miles later I hear "on your left" and the big man rolls past not even breathing hard. I'll admit I had been kind of daydreaming and not really "working" that hard but I was surprised. I picked up the pace, upshifted and put in a good 10 minute effort maintaining 16-17 mph - all the while the big guy is receeding in the distance in front of me.
It wouldn't have bothered me so much except for the fact that I could see him stop pedaling quite often - meanwhile I'm hammering away, tongue hanging out, chest pounding - only to see him steadily pull away.
Anyway - I'm sure Lance or Greg or other pro's can maintain 20mph on a MTB on the road - I sure can't...

You're pretty funny. If you have eyes you can simply look at the distribution. If you like I can post the whole data file and you can masturbate to it.

My comfy cruising speed on flat ground is in the neighborhood of 18.5, that goes up to about 21 with a tailwind and down to 16 or 17 with a headwind.

First, does it really matter... are you racing?
Second, I ride slow - 12 - 14MPH average, varying hills, flats, etc.

I'm a novice... and right out of the gates I cruise in the 16-18mph ball park. I have a lot of smaller hills that are enough to kill my momentum. On the last couple of rides I've learned to use my middle chain ring in those areas rather than trying to huff it on my big ring...

The computer says my average speed is typically 18MPH. That means on flats I'm usually hitting 20MPH to make up for hills, stop lights, and stop signs.
When I ride an MTB on a gravel trail I average 13 to 14 MPH.
When I ride a MTB technical trail,.....Did I mention that I average 18MPH on a road bike?

I averaged 14.5 on a 30 mile yesterday,
Today I think I averaged 15-17. I feel slow too, but I am slowly building up speed. I can go at 14-15 for a bit, but at 17-18 its a little hard for now.

Wow 222 normal power for almost 3.5 hours and the IF is only .79, and no 0 cadence. Man I suck!!

Make sure to clean off the screen when you are done. The complete file is here but you would need WKO to open it.

I don't know why it's showing 2 as the min cadence. Looking at the distributions, it seems that I spend about 9 minutes at 0 power/cadence.
Edit: Here is the data from the thursday evening ride... just the middle part (not to or from). The gap is when Bill and I went back to go looking for those other guys.
Code:
Lap 2 (1:28:46.21): Duration: 1:28:05 (1:44:20) Work: 1007 kJ TSS: 133 (intensity factor 0.954) Norm Power: 277 VI: 1.45 Distance: 24.802 mi Elevation Gain: 3004 ft Elevation Loss: 3080 ft Min Max Avg Power: 0 956 191 watts Heart Rate: 93 190 149 bpm Cadence: 2 124 81 rpm Speed: 0 51.1 16.7 mph Altitude: -21 1016 439 ft Crank Torque: 0 961 194 lb-in

I average between 25 - 32kmh on the flats, depending on wind, distance or if I riding solo or with a group. Uphills, much, much slower. Fastest I've been downhill was 81kmh, but i usually average between 55 - 70kmh downhill depending on road conditions and traffic.

I recently re-injured a hamstring. If my average speed a few months ago was X, my current average speed is X-3.

My 60 day rolling average is a pathetic 13.8. I try to average 15mph every ride; if I don't, I get pissed.
But there is very little truly flat ground here. Everything is either slightly up or downhill, and there's lots of places to climb that obviously kill your average speed.

Seems like I'm always at 22.0 whenever I check on the flats and averaging 18.7 to 19.1 rolling average. I recently started riding with my computer in my back pocket, to spend less time fixating on the numbers.

And oh yeah, on a side note, I thought I had a particularly popular route in my area down pat. I could fly down this 15 mile stretch of path, just kicking ass and passing everyone.
Then I rode with a local club. They were holding conversations and laughing on that same stretch of path at 23-26 mph. I was panting and struggling to keep up.
So clearly I'm pretty damn slow. Passing the MTB/recreational crowd doesn't mean squat.
