Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

EC90 Aero Wheels

They are only slightly heavier (80-120 grams) than 404's and just 2mm shallower, but seems they can be had for at least $500 less.

Is this price difference between the two wheel sets typical?

I'm hesitant to go with tubular wheels, but it seems to be the more popular option for high-end wheels (although clincher seems to be catching up). Do tubular tires tend to be more puncture resistant to compensate for the increased difficulty to replace the tire?

Also, I read in one review that these wheels can fill with water in the rain. Is this common for deep section rims or these rims in particular?

Any input on this? I was thinking about Reynolds Assaults to keep the price more reasonable, but for some reason there are EC90 Aeros available for less than Reynolds Assaults right now.

I guess the rain thing isn't an issue really, considering it doesn't rain often where I live. It would just be nice to know if it is a design issue with these wheels.

You're comparing Soul to Easton and Zipp?

I was considering Soul, but EC90 Aeros can be found for less than C5.0's currently. I don't really think there is any debate as to which is the better wheel. The EC90s are 6mm deeper and roughly the same weight.

I've put about 1000 miles on my EC90 Aero and no complaints, they're a great bargain and a good wheelset.
