Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you know if they're doing anything else differently with the 2011 model? It would be awesome if they changed the brake calipers and levers to silver instead of black. Also the binder bolt.

A bare frameset option would be nice...

Agreed. If I buy, the original components probably won't stay long.

As a newbie to the cycling community, I have to vouch for the idea of a low-priced entry level road bike. I was going to buy a hybrid initially with straight handlebars, but I stumbled across the Fuji Newest 4.0. It's got downtube shifters like this Allez and for me it was much easier to rationalize learning how to use those vs another $200-$300 up front for a road bike. The components are nothing special, but the bike has gotten me hooked and I fully expect to spend way more than the initial sticker price in upgrades. I think entry-level bikes like these are a great way to popularize cycling in general and road cycling in particular. Thumbs up!

Excellent...I was worried that they would discontinue the bike. Black is a nice option...

Climbed Burnt Mountain twice with friends in North Georgia. I created a mongrel 13-28 cassette by combining the standard Shimano 13-26 with a SRAM 11-28 and it works great. The 11 and 12 tooth cogs just seemed too small to be useful. The north side of the hill was very steep with a 20% section but I was able to grind slowly up in the 28 so I was glad I added it. The rivets that held together the 6 largest cogs on each cassette are easy to drill out so I can now tinker with different ratios. I think I need a 30 tooth cog or a compact crank with a 34 before I tackle Brasstown Bald.

Saw one at a LBS... very good price for an entry level road bike! Looks really sharp in red, too!

DAMN! I am impressed!
I use to drive that frequently (My ex wifes family has 100+ acres on the eastern side). I'm not sure I will ever try to ride UP that little lone Brass town where I have boiled the brakes on my Blazer coming down it. LOL

Found the 2011 Allez Double Steel. Looks like they switched out the black parts to silver (except the binder bolt on the seat) and changed the housing to white. Also has Mavic CXP22 instead of the Alex.

Black looks pretty sharp, is the price similar?

I currently have a fixed gear I got on Craigslist, and I'm looking to do some much, much longer rides (Atlanta to Birmingham this Fall), so I was looking at the Steel Allez and the Raleigh Sport. Looking through this thread, some people knock this bike for being a bit expensive but not having STI shifters, but the Sport does and is only a little bit more. Can anyone give me a reason on why I should look at the Steel Allez instead of the Raleigh Sport?

the allez has much more aggressive geometry which should be faster, not necessarily more comfortable though. One thing I will say about using 2200 sti shifters is that I'd probably rather use downtube shifters than 2200 or sora brifters, i think they suck that much though i have limited experience with them.

I love the bike. I am planing on riding the brasstown bald at the end of the year, after my graduation.

For those who has a fetish on DT shifter bikes, you can get a nice and IMHO better bike in the Kona *****. Atleast it has a DA DT and 105 stuff.

Truth. I just wish I knew what kind of steel they used. My ***** is built up with 105 STIs, DA/Open Pro wheels, and Ultegra otherwise, but the thing is a ******** boat anchor. The frame itself isn't too bad, but the fork is downright offensively heavy. Too bad Alpha Q went tits up on their carbon, else I'd put a CS-25 on it.

What do you think would be better for touring?

Downtube, I'm not sure if these particular one's allow, but in friction mode you can use any cassette, there are no index issues, etc. I had a 9 speed 11-32 cassette mated with a pair of 6 speed DT shifters. The same set up used to rock a 8 speed cassette, no changes, no adjustments.

Additionally your front dérailleur is wayyyyyyyyy smoother than any STI shifter could do...

Beaten by Brasstown Bald!

Well, I tried and failed! I rode 3 gaps and then drove my car over to brasstown. Started slow and easy, perhaps 5-6 mph, then slowed to about 4mph on the 24% section after 1.6 miles, then slowed a bit more and fell off! Apparently, the physics don't work below 4 mph... I have a compact crank on order from www.velo-orange.com and I'll be trying again when my legs are fresh.

I'm unlikely to see one of these bikes in person without buying one, so let me ask an awkward question: How is the workmanship on this frame/fork? I realize that this is not a high-end chrome-lugged Italian frameset, but does it give the impression of being a low-end entry-level ("cheap") frameset? If an owner wanted to upgrade to Campy Athena and a Brooks saddle, would it look authentic? Or would it be like putting lipstick on a pig?
