Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

tufo tubular tape for non tufo tires

Reading the fine print Tufo says non necessarily recommended for non Tufo tubular tires like Vitorria. Is this true??? We have one set of really nice wheels that are tubular for special use and I would like to try another set of wheels with the tape but the tires are Vitorria. From years ago I have hated the glue. Last year we tried tubulars again and that Tufo Tape worked great with the Tufo tires. When I finally got a flat (1.5 yr) after installation the bond was terrific when I took the flatted tire off. So I think this system is pretty good but would like to try this with Vitorria tubulars. The "fine print" has me a bit worried but when you look at the tires I don't see much different in the area where you need the tape to stick to the tubular tire.

Suggestions are most welcome.

(er.... I do have glue but would like to use the tape)

Regards, curtwally

I ran Tufo tape with Conti's on my 404's and it works perfectly fine. It can get messy, but it will no matter what tire you're running. I ran Tufo's too - no difference. Call me a cop-out, but I HATE gluing and I live in a town that lacks a decent shop that will do it for me. I'll ride Tufo tape until something changes my mind.

I've used Tufo Extreme tape on all my Contis. Never any kind of problem. Glue just plain sucks.

They just want you to buy their tires. Have used it without issues with continental, veloflex, and vittoria tires.

Hi,

I tried Tufo tape using Vittoria tires and a Zipp 900 disc and a Hed 3c tri-spoke. It didn't work. The tape stuck to the wheels well enough but did not stick to the base tape on the tires. I even tried another roll on one of the wheels (thinking that there might have been a release agent on the base tape) but it still didn't work.

I hope Tufo tape works with Continental tires because when I get a chance I am going to get rid of the Tufos on my road race wheels (Reynolds DV46UL) as I don't like them very much. I really liked the Continental Podiums that I was using before.

I've used Tufo tape with Conti tires. No problem. With the non-extreme version, when you remove the tire, the tape is nearly 100% stuck to the tire with almost nothing left on the rim. Extreme version is different in this respect from what I've read.

If you use tufo tape, are you supposed to scrape off the latex off the base tape of the tubular?

IMO, glue is better. Once you get it down, its not that messy
