Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If your brother is like many of us, I'm pretty sure he won't want you fixing a flat on his bike, since you have no experience wrenching. It sounds like you're the type of person that might accidentally make things worse.

As others have said, come clean with your brother and promise him you won't eff with his stuff anymore without permission.

If the bike is gone, so is the flat and the evidence of you riding it. Give it to me.

So I came clean to my brother when he got home. I was sweating my balls off when I was telling him. He was a little pissed at first but got over it.

He actually showed me how to change the tube out but told me that if I ever take the bike out without him knowing he'll kill me.

So I didn't get an a$$ whooping but I did learn a good lesson. Honesty is the best and I even learned a thing or two about bikes.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. Until next time everyone... I hope my next thread is a positive one!

Obviously the best thing to do is fess up. Don't listen to the jokers... You already admitted to not knowing squat about bikes and changing a tire is one of those fundamentals... You should've just left it alone until he came back. Now you could've scratched the paint or even worse mess with the derailluers and such... What if he starts riding after work (like most of us do) and the rear wheel falls off due to a loose QR skewer (fundamental newb mistake)? I wouldn't want anyone touching my bike unless they were experienced.

EDIT: you got lucky...

So your brother is 28 and has the money to spend on a 5.1 Madone but still lives with mommy and daddy?

That's only because nobody mentioned soaking the tire in lighter fluid and burning it off the rim.

*sigh*

So was it a tubular tire, or a clincher?

Having a Madone doesn't mean you have money...

i can attest to this as i've somehow spent over $6k on bikes and cycling related accessories/goodies in the past year that i've been into it.... and i'm in college full time.. i have no idea how i pulled this off...

but good story. you made the right choice. i'd be pissssseeddddd if someone tried to cover something up on ANY of my bikes... let alone a bike of that caliber.

Nonetheless, who can deny the indisputable value of the flowchart.

I't been around for years . . . it works for almost any crisis and it could have worked for the OP. Hey, slow leaks sometimes don't show up til the next day, so just act like you know nothing.

It's great!

Awwwwwww, Mikey.

I just saw this (don't frequent this forum much, anymore).

Just because you didn't LIKE the mechanics' answers ... doesn't mean they were bad answers.

It just means that ... you didn't like them.

I'm really getting a very clear picture of your "character," here, and ... it isn't very flattering!

Good luck to ya', Mate!

Brother should be proud that you did a 30 mile ride "around the block" like it was nothing. Good job on coming clean.
