Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If Ultegra moves up, does 105??

I see discussion about Ultegra coming a lot closer to DA this next Christmas. Does anyone know about 105? Will the void just get bigger?

IMO Campy has created a gap between Dura Ace and Record where Record is at a level above Dura Ace and Chorus vs Dura Ace is chocolate vs vanilla argument.

That being said if Shimano want to keep pace I believe they need to get DA on par with Record and get Ultegra on par with Chorus. Which in turn leads to your question, would that lead to 105 being brought up to Centaur. I would assume so, but what will the timing be?

As I understand it the Ultegra name will be dropped for '05 and this level of componentry will be 10 speed.

105 won't be upgraded in 2005 - however... you can just buy a pair of Ultegra 10 or Da 10 shifters, cassette and chain - install it and you have 10 speed.

hmm....it seems the new 10 speed hubs are ONLY compatible with 10 speed cassettes, but older, 9 speed hubs are compatible with 9 AND 10 speed cassettes...for some reason, that doesn't make a whole ton of sense, given that the 10 speed hubs have the little step down for the smallest cog. so, why would they make 10 speed cassettes work with 9 speed hubs, but not the other way around? planned obsolescence?

i thought the chain was too narrow for standard "9 speed" chainrings too...but i guess it's just narrower on the outside. :-\

my guess is that they were worried alot of people would avoid 10speed if they had to sell their expensive 9spd wheelsets (Ksyrium, Bontrager, etc.) and buy a compatable 10spd set. This way they just change the cassette.

btw the difference is the ridges on the freehub body are taller on the 10 spd, but the same spacing.

Supposedly, the 9 speed ridges weren't high enough, and maybe there was some kind of slippage or wear problem? I never heard of anyone having that kind of problem w/9-spd, but that's Shimano's explanation. It might be an improvement, but I suspect planned/forced obsolescence, combined with a degree of forced Shimano brand loyalty may be the real motive. Stick with 9-speed compatible hubs and all is well.

Then switch to sachs, or campy, or suntour. (maybe not suntour) In my veiw forced obsolesence = forced brand abandonment.
