Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

upgrading bikes

Im looking to upgrade my bike and was hoping to get some suggestions.I currentley have a 99 model cannodale r600. Ive had my eye on getting a 09 cannondale synapse carbon 6. I was wondering if anyone here owns one and if so how do you like the bike? also are there anyother bikes in the same price range that I should look into?

Well, I'm still in my cycling infancy but I've often heard that the best upgrade you can get for your bike is a nice set ov wheels.

I rode a Cannondale Synapse SL 1 and it was a nice riding bike and it was fairly light at just over 15lbs, however it was too big and I sold it. My problem with the Synapse 6 is the "entry level" components. Usually when one upgrades one normally upgrades to better components. And the fact that it would be pretty heavy would bother me, although that may not be an issue for you. However, the Synapse 6 frame is carbon and it looks nice, so if budget is an issue now, you can upgrade the components later when your budget allows.

The Synapse C6 and the SL are night and day ... The 6 is an 18lb bike. ...and yes, the component selection is just enough for you to say you got a carbon bike for under $2K ...We almost bought a Synapse C5 for my wife last month - honestly, I never htought I'd say this, but the Madone 4.5 was a better bike than the C'dale. I believe Trek has a better warranty, Trek is in less financial trouble and the Madone line is only gaining more credibility by the year - Cannondale is a professed specialist in Aluminum. They started dabbling with carbon when they saw the industry going that direction - they are far from the cutting edge. Ask any C'dale dealer who's willing to tell you how many rear triangles they saw break in the past couple years on 6:13 and System 6 bikes - its an ugly number.
Again, Lord forgive me, but I say Trek.
