Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I hate cats.

And no i am not talking about categories, i am talking about the little furry animal.

So i was out riding today, came around a downhill corner at somewhere between 18 and 25 mi/h and i see a cat on the side of the road. I move left a bit, so i did not hit the cat, but then the cat starts running left. At this point i am two yards away from the cat, and it dives right in between my wheels.

THUD.

My back wheel goes four inches in the air, i feel a cat trying to crawl up my leg, it falls off, and after a few seconds trying to get back control, i look back, and there goes the cat walking off.

I hate cats.

4 points for hitting the cat.
Another 4 points for not going down.

I hope the cat wasn't badly injured (it may have walked away, but that doesn't mean it wasn't hurt). Sounds like you should have been braking. What if it was a kid crossing the street that you couldn't have avoided? (Yes, humans can get that caught in the headlight look and not know which way to move, too.)

Well, to be honest any small furry animal could have exhibited this sort of behavior: squirrel, rabbit, etc.
I hate anything that comes under my wheels that isn't road.

You should have slowed way down or made a lot of noise when you saw it. Suppose it had been a young child. Get a bell. I'm only teasing but sometimes noise making does the trick.

I'm checking out icanhascheezburger.com to see if a cat is bragging there about how he almost succeeded to carry home a big one today.

when it comes to little fury animals I always make myself laugh at the notion of hitting a squirrel and its tail getting wrapped in a spoke and just kinda slinging it around

there was a thread about a squirrel tail being ripped off and a bunny head being ripped off. the bunny didn't survive, i'm guessing.

Word. Cats are awesome. If I ever see one intentionally hit a cat or fail to avoid one when there's the option, I'm taking my wrench to his spokes.

EDIT: Not saying OP hit the cat intentionally or anything, just saying cat-haters beware. Cat-lovers are a powerful group. Just look at /b/...

Who's being tough? I'm serious. **** with a cat and I'll **** with you. Cruelty to animals is not cool.

And is that really the best "internet tough guy" graphic you could come up with? I rather like this one:

Did it...a squirrel ran into my front wheel and must have caught on a spoke. It was flung up to my shoulder level. He passed so close I could feel the fur brush by me.

While riding another time two cats were chasing each other and zipped into the road. One passed before the front tire and the other passed behind the back tire. It happened so fast I didn't even react.

You have a choice whether or not to do bad things to an animal. The animal doesn't necessarily have much choice in whether or not it lets you do it. People who intentionally harm animals are first-rate sociopaths.

+1 but I'd perhaps be a tad less militant.

I also feel the same way about turtles and I can't tell you how many times I've seen drivers swerve to hit turtles on the roadway. Makes no sense, pisses me off to no end.
