Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

16 oz. Powerade Zero
8 oz. orange juice
< 1/8 tsp. Morton Lite Salt

Mixed into 24 oz bottle.

Rather get the calories from OJ than HFCS. The OJ I use is calcium and vitamin fortified as well, can't hurt. The Morton Lite Salt is a salt "substitute" that has about equal amounts of sodium and potassium.

I should add that I don't pay for my Powerade Zero, I get mycoderewards.com codes from a ton of friends and family and use them to redeem for Powerade. I usually get on average 4-6 coupons a week for free 32oz. bottles.

Hammer Heed unflavored, which actually has a very light citrus flavor. Powerade, Gatorade, Cytomax, etc., make my stomach churn in heat.

+1 for unflavored HEED.

Longer stuff, i.e. >2 hours, it's Perpetuem all the way.

Gatorade and water for my fluids. Clif bars, shot bloks, and GU gels for "food."

I mix bulk maltodextrin, hammer edurolytes (break open the capsule and pour it in), and a very small amount of some sort of flavoring (gatorade powder, tang, koolaide, etc)

Powerade should be off the market. It only has 55 mg of sodium, whereas gatorade has 110 mg of sodium (in an 8oz portion). So powerade has half the sodium of gatorade, which means you have to drink twice as much powerade than gatorade to replenish your electrolytes

I vote gatorade.

Unflavored HEED for me too.

For electrolytes I use Endurolytes and salt tablets. I prefer to keep my hydration/calories and electrolytes seperate so I can adjust each as needed. I also eat a fair amount of solid food.

I make my own recovery drink. Recoverite is good, its just expensive.

Being I am 'more fiscally conservative': Water with a dash of lemon juice and a spoonful of sugar. Another dash of lite salt (potassium & sodium) if it will be a long, hot ride.

Maybe not everyone needs a lot of sodium ...

Rides less than 50 miles: water only.

Rides more than 50 miles: water + unflavoured SIS energy drink.

If it's going to be hot or if there's a lot of climbing and cooling is a problem, I'll take some SIS Electrolyte too, just in case.

I stick to water. All of the sports drinks I've tried have upset my stomach. Most of my rides are in the 30-40 mile range though, so getting some liquid calories isn't too big of a deal.

Another HEED/perpetuem fan here. HEED for rides up to ~40miles or so, I start adding perpetuem into the routine for longer rides. Endurolytes work really well for staving off cramps.

It'd be good to find an alternative to Recoverite for a recovery drink, I like it but it is $$ - interested to here of other recommendations/recipes.

On the bike - Clif Shot Electrolyte:

Lots of sodium, decent ingredients, mild taste, responsible company.

Recovery - mix1:

About as close to a protein & fruit smoothie as you can get in a bottle.
