When I looked a couple of months ago, an entry level 9-speed at the back is around the $800 mark, normally with mostly Tiagra components with the main differentiators being things like a carbon fibre fork and a 105 rear derailleur. The most commonly found examples are going to be the Trek 1200, Giant OCR2 and Specialized Allez Sport.
I've been told that a good time to get a bike is just after the '05 bikes come out because then all the '04 bikes will be on sale. It all depends on how long you want to wait.
