Got the Performance Travel Trac Alloy for $118.78 shipped with their current 20% off online orders of house brands plus 628 as a promo code. Heckuva deal I think.

Sale only on until 10pm (EST I assume) today...hurry hurry.

timeedgevxr 09-24-09 12:20 PM

been riding rollers for 10 years. Ridden all sorts of them and I can assure you that the $150 minoura rollers or Performance Bike equal will be just fine.

Alexinator 09-24-09 12:34 PM

I'm debating with myself on buying those rollers (Thanks botto). For only 100 bucks, it's a damn nice set of rollers. Who needs a resistance unit when you have a towel or t-shirt (or something similar to rub against the rear roller).

Being in the hilly Minnesota environment near winter time is definitely enough encouragement to buy it... But can I justify it after just buying 100 dollars worth of jersey/shorts and a new full CF road bike? Hmmmm...

The Mrs. just LOVES that I got into cycling....

Do these "eat" tyres as fast as people talk about the the resistance trainers to the point of recommending a specific wheel/tyre for this purpose?

AQ

botto 09-24-09 01:14 PM

no.

Since there is very very little frictive movement between the rubber and smooth aluminum/PVC (depending on roller) then there is pretty much no wear at all. Plus, the one that pretty much stole this thread linked by Botto is a free motion roller, no resistance at all.

That'd be fun...I know there are a number of us...Duluth would be fun. Hill repeats out of the lakefront? :)

then tires wouldn't wear out on the road either. I don't powerslide/float my bike through turns on the road.

The resistance and wear is related to the tire deformation. air pressure has a huge effect here

Welcome!

Yep, I ordered yesterday right before I posted, got the shipping confirmation about 2 hours ago...they're already on their way! Not bad.

Actually, thank botto. Without his post I wouldn't have gone to Performance to look, I signed up for their e-mail list while I was there, and the first e-mail from them was the 20% off house brands. Funny how things fall into place eh?

chasem 09-25-09 05:53 PM

haha indeed it is. Got my shipping notice a couple hours ago as well... look forward to the arrival.

and yes, due thanks to botto

I didn't make the movie but maybe it's good cose i have blue eye after my first ride on the rollers ;/ now i am riding with my helmet on. It is much harder then on the road - the feeling is different somehow i have to put much more effort into pedaling.

I have one question why to i hump on the bike on the rollers it is kinda in going up and down as if i push the pedals down is my stroke that bad or should i get more pressure into tires?

Alexinator 09-27-09 03:08 PM

Tires should be pressurized between the min and the max on the side of the tire. Maybe you don't have it sized right to your bike? The front tire roller should be directly underneath the tire, not fore/aft of the tire.

Is this a resistance roller or are you using anything to create resistance? That could also be messin' you up.

Mael 09-27-09 04:48 PM

No i have non resistance roller but it seam to pedal on them that is harder then on the road, and it is sized correctly for a bike. Tires should be ok with the bike since bike have those tires at default.

OP -- it may SEEM harder as you are stressed about falling off the edge. I know that was my problem for a very long time with my rollers.

Those around the MSP area -- we should definitely get together! I'm in River Falls, but going to the cities is not an issue.

Mael 09-28-09 06:27 AM

I felt from rollers when i unstressed myself and thought it goes smoothly, then i looked at my front wheel (big mistake) and kaboom.

guadzilla 09-28-09 08:57 AM

My roller gets in by mid next-week as well... thanks OP, for starting this discussion. It is what made me get one :)

khatfull 09-28-09 10:11 AM

Mine gets here 9/30. Trip to emergency room shortly thereafter? :)

that might be a day hospitals remember... mine's due the same day

Mael 09-28-09 05:27 PM

Just look straight and not on the front wheel. l am not kind of person that sweat but those rollers make me sticky in few minutes.

You'll be fine, learning to ride rollers is not as hard as the myth makes it out to be--as botto said, 20-30 minutes and you should be fine.
