Depends on whether or not you have shag carpeting (i'll assume you do, since that's the most stylish). You just need to make sure that the feet on the rollers keep the rollers high enough off the carpet so they don't rub (unless you want more resistance, and are not married!). I usually ride mine in my office, which has a rug on the floor, and don't have any problems. I've also ridden them in the family room (while the wife was out), which has typical wall-to-wall carpeting, and they were fine. I suspect that you'll have problems if you have thick padding under your carpet.
Stylish I am not... :) |
Just got mine; about the rubber band connecting the front and back rollers, Should i fold the rollers when not in use?
a) Yes, because there is no tension in the rubber band, rollers perform better and the rubber band lasts longer. b) No. Rubber band tension just marginally affects the roller performance and it will need to be replaced every so often regardless. c) Depends/it doesn't matter..... include your own response/explanation here Thanks AQ |

Mine arrived at work just now. Opened the box but didn't remove them. The Al frame and rollers seem quite nicely made and sturdy...for $118 shipped I don't know how one could go wrong.
In the PDF manual I found on Performance's website they reference a fluid resistance unit, HF-300 Hydroforce Resistance Unit, but alas, no longer available. I bet if someone wanted resistance on these rollers they could retro fit the Minoura accessory mag unit to the frame. All three rollers ahve grooves for rubber bands on both sides. I bet it could be done. |
Got mine today as well... First time on rollers they are a bit nerve wrecking but you get comfortable quickly.
Only thing that concerns me a bit is if you did come off the rollers the nuts stick out quite a bit on the sides and would likely do a number on your rims. Might have to rig something up to smooth that out just in case. Otherwise these seem like money well spent! |
First 5 minutes. Then gotta put kids to bed...
Getting on and off is harder than riding. I setup in a doorway and only bonked the door frame once or twice. I didn't have enough gear to start to get some good gyro on the wheels. Once I got into my 50 and the middle of the cassette it was a lot easier. Made me sweat, but I think that was nerves rather than extertion. I can see the value of some sort of resistance later... This will be interesting. :) |
Well, the riding isn't bad at all, the rollers themselves are a pretty good work out, more than I thought they'd be...of course, that could be my heart racing from terror :)
Getting on is a lot harder than getting off...getting off: unclip at speed, put that foot down, and coast to a stop, easy. Getting on is a whole different story. I was able to do it a few times without leaning the door frame. It will take a while but I think it will be WELL worth it. I had no idea how squirrely I was doing something as simple as wiping my forehead. Lot of work to do to get nice and smooth. Thanks again botto for the push to the Travel Tracs....very nicely made for the money and they even work on the carpet just fine. |
More on the roller saga...
Finally figured out I had the CTC of the rollers set too short. I didn't measure my axle-to-axle distance properly and upon closer examination with the bike on the rollers the front tire was just a couple of mm ahead of the center of the roller. No wonder it was so squirrely. I set them one setting wider to 995mm and wow, what a difference. I can get on and off without propping now, although I have my Soloflex arm close by still. For those who recently got or are considering rollers, be real careful about the setup, a few mm can make all the difference. |

lol (and thanks for the link) |
I've got the Botto-approved rollers from performance and they do seem to be as really all I need, but I must say I do like the modern-euro look of the new Tacx Antares and PBK has good price on them (when they can keep them in stock).

How many times am I gonna fall in 20-30 minutes?
lol (and thanks for the link) As I said above, I didn't have mine adjusted properly, and that made all the difference. I would setup in a doorway the first couple of times, your hips centered in the door frame. That way, if you get squirrley and ride off you can just lean and catch yourself on the hip. That worked nicely for me. I'm out of the doorway now, but have a close by support. Few more sessions and that won't be a necessity. |

Seriously, it's not that bad.
