Clipless good. Falling bad.

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

See...I don't get it. It's a little fall it happens, and how can you be mad about it?

I've had clipless pedals for a while and the other day as my dad and I were going out of the backyard for a ride we came up to the gate to keep the dog in. Granted I probably shouldn't have clipped in for a 25 ft roll from the garage to the fence I did...oh well. So I come up to the gate and he kind of let it close behind him, in an effort to hold it for me he stopped and got his tire in it so that I could grab it then go. Anywho I misconstrued the motion and went to stop from running into him and half grab the gate, missed the gate and fell over, going at least 1.5MPH. Anyways I started laughing, really it happens I was fine, wasn't bleeding, bike was fine, everything good. It's a fall everyone does it and move on.

Let's just hope this is mine for the 3,000 mile average or whatever the number is, haha

I got to agree with UMD, not everyone will fall on clipless, as long as you know to unclip you always have time, even when you brake you have about 3 seconds while the bike is still, to unclip in time BEFORE the bike tilts one way and drops on you.

I don't recall ever falling on the road but I had a clipless spill on the dirt today. Unclipped the left foot as I was stopping to avoid a hazard and started to flip forward. I needed my right foot to prevent the fall but it was coming upwards while I was falling forward and I didn't seem to get the angle to unclip it. So I rolled.

And apparently I've been using a different concept of "most" than "most" people, so I'll even agree that "most" people have or will fall but it is by no means inevitable.

A few years back I was in my apartment holding myself up against a wall while adjusting my cleats. I started to tip and couldnt get un-cliped. As I was falling I quickly noticed the corner of the glass table top heading straight for my eye. I made a very quick evasive manuer and put my hand out.

Broken thumb. 6 weeks in a cast.

I know better than to put my hand out but in this particular instance it was a choice between a gouged out eye or the thumb.

+1, I agree with UMD as well. The only time I've fallen on a road bike due to not being able to unclip was due to a Wellgo pedal that would not let go of the cleat, including after I fell (had to take the shoe off and use a screwdriver to release the cleat).
Otherwise, I've not had a problem. When I'm tired, I always unclip early, don't know why, just became a habit.
PS The Wellgo pedals were free, now I know why.
