Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wheelbarrow Forum?

On many of my business trips to Europe and Asia, during downtime I search for an LBS which I'm certain must exist given the popularity of local cycling. Last week in Dalian China I asked a local buddy where I can find one and he blessed me with some Confuscian wisdom. "Look he says, here in China we don't think of bicycles as status symbol excercise devices, they're a basic tool for transportation. Would you use a wheelbarrow for excercise and install carbon fiber components?"

He sounds like a commie spokesman looking down on the imperialist decadent American pastime.
Or he just didn't know where a bike shop was.

So did he mean they sell them at other stores, not bike stores, or what?

I've read that in India, there's like a bike shop on every corner.

I find it hard to believe that nobody in China rides a carbon fiber road bike. He just didn't know where a recreational bike shop was. Maybe they have some for transportation bikes and others for racing bikes, but I'm sure they exist.

I don't see where the OP claimed his buddy is going to be building a bike for him.
