Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That Windsor looks nice, actually.

Edit: That's Tiagra shifters, not 105. I take it back.

There we go! haha thank you djh , that provides some much needed info. I had no clue it was a charity ride, that wasn't the impression i got from my friend who seemed to make it out to be more of a hardcore race than anything. Nevertheless with the quality of my current bike, I feel an upgrade is necessary for this ride and ones i'll be competing in soon

Thanks to used eBay upgrades- I built a 17-pound race rocket all for UNDER $1500. Its so fast, I completed my first metric century in under five hours:

CAAD 9/7 50cm:
-Shimano Ultegra 6510 9-speed shifters
-Shimano Ultegra 6600 F/R derailleurs, brakes
-Shimano R700/Ultegra-level Cranks
-Shimano Dura Ace 11-21 cassette/chain
-Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels
-Continental Grand Prix 4000s tires
-Selle Italia SLR saddle
-Bontrager Race X Lite Blade carbon bars
-Shimano Ultegra SPD-SL pedals
-Profile Design carbon cages

The suggestions to follow this idea have really gotten me intrigued, how does one go about actually removing the parts and packaging them etc.? do i talk to my lbs about it? and dilberto, is that the stock fork on your caad?

I think you should look for a good discounted new bike, or good used bike. Don't jump the gun worrying about upgrades. Save that for when you have specific changes you want to make, then start a new thread about that.

Find a good bike, ride the heck out of it.

I will throw in my hat and say a caad would be a great bike... I really do suggest going to the LBS and talking with them. If they are a good shop they should get you fitted and everything and a lot of the time a shop will give you discounts on accessories when buying a bike, which means you will have extra cash to throw at shoes and pedals... on a metric I would not want to be using platforms.

A good LBS is better investment then an upgrade from tiagra to 105 IMO.

I ride tiagra, and it truly isn't horrible. When tuned correctly, it shifts as crisp as I need it to. Believe me, Tiagra is more than good enough for someone on a budget. I've done centuries and double centuries and have never felt that my gruppo has held me back.

Today's Tiagra is yesterdays 105. People seem to lose sight of that, it really won't hold you back at all.

+1. Not saying that I wouldn't mind upgrading to Rival or Ultegra though

Not to take sides on the initial point, but what makes you think "being a tool" and "knowing more about bike racing than 99% of the people here" are mutually exclusive?

To be clear, I wasn't trying to give you a hard time or chastise your or anything... it's just that a lot of people call these kinds of things races and IMO that's a bad thing when it's not actually a race and most of the participants don't think they are racing.

My 2 cents.

I agree with getting the entry level CAAD9 and selling the parts. But IMO, I would get Rvial instead of Ultegra and I think that Mavic Askiums are just fine, if you want to same some money. Better to spend the money on shoes, pedals, and clothing.

Tiagra/105 mix with Tektro brakes and upgraded wheels. Probably one of the better BD deals.

I wasn't saying you did or didn't; I was merely reacting to his statement that the one disproved the other. I've seen you be a tool sometimes (god I hate that use of that word), but I am too, sometimes. I just wanted to point out that his statement made no sense.

I'll admit I can be one on occasion (did you get the joke in that I denied the 99% part but not the tool part), but anyone who thinks I was being one in this thread is an insecure moron.

Yeah, I got that, but I'm a bit distracted with some $%^#@$@ NYS DMV nonsense and wasn't certain enough it was intentional to run with it. And yeah, you're not being one here.

I hate the DMV, for the record. And NYS.

If youre willing/able to increase your budget a smidge, you could be the owner of a
really nice alloy race bike , equipped with Shimano Ultegra 6700 for $1295--no s__t!

And, you can get it in any color--as long as you chose black.

I haven't ridden one or talked with any one who has, but their wheels get
good reviews by all of the people (3) I've come across who own a set.
