Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Post back when you build them up.
I the reason I asked for "Pictures of a bike you built up" was to get ideas of what frames/components people choose when they can. Building up bike is art as much as mechanics.

But umd can post anything he wants, have you built the Tricross??

Very nice ! I'm not a big fan of black tape though----I'd go red or white if it was me.

Call me crazy, but there is something about white tape and Ti...

Great bike.

1994 Cramerotti frame in titanium paint - Columbus Genius - It was on sale and I was looking for a high end steel frame at the time. 59cm was a perfect size and I bought the last one!

The bicycle started with Shimano 105 parts left over from my Trek 2100. Now they're upgraded to DA 9spd.

Syncros Altura 140mm stem - found this to be the stiffest stem ever in the 90's when I was racing.

Profile Deep Drop 44cm handlebar - needed something with lots of places to put my hands with a classic look and feel. However now I have the Kestrel SL CF bar to liven the steering and lighten the feel.

1995 Sugino CF seatpost - one of the first ever CF seatposts built - Got this at the bike show for $30.

Titanium binder bolt - forgot the brand name but the campy bolt broke while I was commuting to work one time. I had to ride seatless.

Look PP196 pedals - found this to retain the cleats the best - no pulling out during sprints!

Rolf Vector Comp wheelset - Love the look of them blue wheels. Got them out of the box from a 2000 Trek at a dealer. He overcharged me that bastard! Oh well.

Selle Italia Genuine GEL saddle - got this on sale at a store. Last one too!

Most of my bikes, I've stripped down to bare frame and rebuilt but here are two recent ones that I purchased as framesets.

2008 Guerciotti Cross Force

2008 Argon 18 Helium (build in progress)

and one more, just purchased.

2009 CKT ALTT-7b Track

I was going to post the rest but I got sidetracked... it's difficult to dig up pictures when I am work because pretty much everything is blocked, I just surf from my phone on breaks.

It is a Tricross pro frame, avid shorty brakes, SRAM Red components, Arione saddle, S900 cranks w/Quarq (not the same one), and Ksyrium ES wheels. In the picture I have speedplays but I used ti eggbeaters offroad. I have no idea what the bars are, I think they may have been the ones that came wth my Allez. All of the components came off other stuff except for the brakes, so this complete build was less than a grand

And yes, it got used (and I should clarify because I got slammed for this when I posted it before, that I was at the top of the hill and putting the bike down as the pic was taken, and that's why it's not on my shoulder)...

And this is my old Tarmac SL shortly after I built it up; it went through a few minor changes while I had it, most notably I replaced the ass hatchet Toupe with the Arione CX... pretty much everything from here went onto my SL2, except the bars, stem, and post. On this bike I had the s-works bars, and Ritchey WCS carbon stem (and post when I axed the Toupe). Those wheels actually came with it, I had bought this as a complete bike but stripped it down and sold the DA group and replaced it with Red. I was going to sell the wheels but ended up really liking them so I kept them, and also use them on my SL2.

I suppose my old TCR qualifies as well. I bought it as a complete bike and rode it stock for a while. After a while it no longer resembled how it was purchased as I had replaced everything. Same Reynolds as I had on my SL2, SRAM Force, Ti Speedplays, Ritchey WCS bar and post, Bontrager somethingorother bars, Truvativ cranks, and Zero Gravity brakes.

Is that a Red crankset? Nice look. Maybe it's just me but is the big ring >52?

No, it's a s-works crankset. Based on lightning crankset. Big ring is 53.

Edit: Here's a shot of the Quarq + S-Works crankset on my SL2

Let's see. Bikes not necessarily in chronological order.

First, The Ugliest Mountain Bike On Earth. Built on an extreme shoestring budget, stretching my connections as a mechanic at my university bike coop and friendships with local LBS owners to try mountain biking, and of course to see what I could do with limited money. I put it together for something like $300. I had some problems with some of the parts, but this bike rode fabulously well, otherwise. Sold it when I moved South.

Next, my 2006 Surly Long Haul Trucker. No new photographs of this for years - this one is from summer '06 - and it's different in several respects. Lower bars, different saddle, different brakes, levers, bars, crank, blah blah blah. I also don't tour with it anymore. My knees can't do loaded touring. So I commute instead.

And my road bike of course. I've been reluctant to post to this thread, since I'm making several changes soon. Vain, I know! I got a really great deal on this frameset last June after I crashed my ancient steel road bike. Fantastic in both crits and RR's.

With some Edge 38s that I borrowed in April (amazing wheels, by the way):

And the current set up, shot a couple weeks later.

I must be sick but I just went through this entire post. Uh....except for the reading thingy. However, I haven't yet gotten tired of looking at bikes and all the decisions that the bike builder has to make to create their own riding machine.

I'm not that experienced at this as most of the folks here obviously are. I'm older and more of a steel bike fan. But, in the past month I did build from the frame up a bike that somewhat approaches these lofty threads. It's a 1999. Wow, I'm currently preparing myself for the BIG leap to one of those "modern" 2000 bikes in the near future. Maybe.

1999 Allez Sport A1 frame
105 10 spd brifters
Ultegra everything else.

Also throwing in a wild card because I bought it as a basket case and completely broke it down and rebuilt and repacked everything except for the BB.

85 Bianchi Limited
Complete 600 Group.
All original-except the usual bar tape & tires.

Another one of my self-built stable, my single speed built from an unknown c'80 frame

Weighs in about 17#. Besides assembly, I sandblasted & painted the frame, and laced the wheelset.

I just realized that almost all of my bikes were built by me, and I've build literally thousands more at the 'shop.

All but the red Cannondale and both Giants are still with me.
------
After the last race of a long weekend where I unexpectedly slept in a college dorm and raced again. I recently sold this frameset to it's new proud owner in Washington [state].

BFSSFG IRO Group Buy, I built it for my dad. I've no clue what he did with that seat, but it's a comfy riding bike whne it's setup well. 28c tires, easy gearing, etc...

Full NJS Erba Keirin frameset, the dents were repaired, shoddily-drilled rear [brake] bridge refilled and repainted in chameleon paint. I got the frame for free, but it didn't fit, so I traded it for the IRO underneath. I wish I still had this, but I can't dwell on that.

IRO Angus, repainted white. Alpha Q full carbon fork added. Dura-Ace track cranks in 165 and some Deda Pista bars. I took off the fork for the Serotta build. This bike is my commuter now with a steel fork and flat bars. It will become a track bike again when I start racing on the banks again next season.

2005 Cannondale CAAD8. I raced this for two years and made tons of changes during that time. I sold the frame to a forum member int he tri-state area, who recently sold it to it's new owner in Taiwan. Her name was Candice.

My "off-brand" builds...

Interloc (IRD) Impala - Reynolds 853 - My first build, my first roadie in 30 years.

ParkPre Image C6 - My second build, my first carbon frame. Not nearly enough miles on it yet.

My first bike that was all mine. 1987 Cannondale Criterium. Very stiff, very fast, very twitchy. I had the chance to race this bike in the local crit last season. I finished top-10 and it got tons of second looks. It was like death with the training tires and brindled headset, but it was very fun. I got to show off to the other guys how to shift downtube levers in a sprint.

Just so I can have my whole collection in one general area. This is my new daily rider. I love it. The frame has that real patina, a few dents, and it rides like a champ. I've got my PowerTap wheelset hooked up to it and it's now a fully functional, scientific, no frills training rig weighing in at about 25-27 pounds.

My TT bike. My team's owner and I spent some time building up this bastard of a rig, but it works. I didn't get to spend as much time as I wanted riding it, but whatever.

And finally my Guerciotti 'cross bike again. Under $700 build out of spare parts. Brakes should be here tomorrow and I'll be racing it later in the evening.

MISSING: My two Trek's of the past. I built one into a track bike, I built the other for free out of spare parts at the 'shop, but gave to to my neighbor because I didn't want to fix his son's awful Huffy.

I grabbed a field sprint for 5th and a 3rd place on a bike with downtube shifters at a local crit series this summer. It was all I had in town (I was living in an apartment with literally no furniture, sleeping on a Thermarest, really roughing it). Put down some good, hard jumps and attacks on that bike, too. Yeah, my Rival-equipped race bike is a hell of a lot better, but you can still give some hurt with DT shifters and a 6-speed cassette. Yeah, and Biopace rings.

Honestly, I don't shift a hell of a lot when sprinting out of the saddle on E5, either. Maybe one or two, more than that means a long sprint, so I'm either seated and spinning hard during the run-up, final meters or both, or seated and spent. Long sprints aren't my thing; get up to speed in the wheels, shift, jump, shift again, that's about it usually.
