Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I know this thread is tongue-in-cheek, but seeing ordinary people lust for pointlessly fancy stuff while so much of humanity has literally nothing says everything there is to know about human nature. I'm all for having fun, but for most of us our good fortune is derived from simply being born extremely well. Perhaps skipping a new bike once along the way for some third world travel might be a good thing. It's weird when dressed trendily to hand over your bag of gorp to a starving man.

But you can't bike to a third world country if you don't have a Cervelo or a Ciocc or whatever. You need to be able to float. So in a way, buying expensive bike schwag helps you save starving children.

Oh please. People drive $50K cars and nobody bats an eyelash, but ride a nice bike and you're spitting on poor people.

I spend 80-100 hours a week in the hospital helping patients and serving our country. My wife is an educator and spends her time helping sexual assault victims. We also donate to charity year round. I won't be selling off my Cervelo, thanks.

I find it hilarious that the self-righeousness about money comes out on a forum where just about everyone rides a bike that 99.7% of the world would consider needlessly extravagant. How many times have you heard "Wow, that's a really fancy bike. How much did that cost, like $500?"

Why would I want to help starving children when I could use that money to decrease my aerodynamic drag by 5% with a pair of Zipps?

No worries. I fully realize that I'm throwing rocks from my glass house. However I realize that as a New Yorker, for you a day without verbal abuse is like a day without sunshine for most people. I was just trying to do my part!

I don't think sced was aiming his thoughts at just cyclists.

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

We should all help the needy. But in what fashion? If you hand a starving man a bag of food, he will continue to starve after you walk away. If you stay and continue to feed him, he will grow dependent on you and you will do him and yourself harm in the long run. I say it's better to help by creating the opportunity to allow a starving man to feed himself. Give him a job and he will thrive. And there's no better place to get him started than, the local Schwag factory. In time, he may become the CEO of Schwag, Inc. and in turn, do his part by buying someone else's Schwag, thus completing the cycle.

You see, my guilt ridden friend, in the end, it's all Schwag anyhoo.

correct

If you build a fire for a cold man he will be warm for a night, but if you set him on fire he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.

Teach a man to fish, and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Not for nothing, but I'm not so sure I want a triathlete taking out my appendix. Those guys can't even ride a bicycle in a straight line half the time.

Some day I'll finish grad school, have a well paying job and won't have as much time to ride, so I'll be a fat slow guy with tons of swag just like everyone else. No more debating if I really need to spend the extra cash on chamois cream.

I am not sure whether to dread or look forward to it.
