The Bike Schwag is worth it. Trust me on this.

I know this thread is tongue-in-cheek, but seeing ordinary people lust for pointlessly fancy stuff while so much of humanity has literally nothing says everything there is to know about human nature. I'm all for having fun, but for most of us our good fortune is derived from simply being born extremely well. Perhaps skipping a new bike once along the way for some third world travel might be a good thing. It's weird when dressed trendily to hand over your bag of gorp to a starving man.

But you can't bike to a third world country if you don't have a Cervelo or a Ciocc or whatever. You need to be able to float. So in a way, buying expensive bike schwag helps you save starving children.

I find it hilarious that the self-righeousness about money comes out on a forum where just about everyone rides a bike that 99.7% of the world would consider needlessly extravagant. How many times have you heard "Wow, that's a really fancy bike. How much did that cost, like $500?"

No worries. I fully realize that I'm throwing rocks from my glass house. Between physical therapy for a hip problem, and a persistent head and chest cold from hell, my mileage totals have been pretty crappy since May. However I realize that as a New Yorker, for you a day without verbal abuse is like a day without sunshine for most people. I was just trying to do my part!

Oh please. People drive $50K cars and nobody bats an eyelash, but ride a nice bike and you're spitting on poor people.

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

I enjoy learning about the products, comparing features, prices, vendors etc. Going out and buying the first fancy big dollar thing I see brings me no joy.
I ride an Italian frame (Cinelli) that I bought in Canada, that has Italian parts I bought in the UK and Ohio, French rims I bought in Washington, Swiss spokes I bought in Illinois and I built the whole thing myself. That's joy to me.

You see, my guilt ridden friend, in the end, it's all Schwag anyhoo.

Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish, and he'll sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

Not for nothing, but I'm not so sure I want a triathlete taking out my appendix. Those guys can't even ride a bicycle in a straight line half the time.

Some day I'll finish grad school, have a well paying job and won't have as much time to ride, so I'll be a fat slow guy with tons of swag just like everyone else. No more debating if I really need to spend the extra cash on chamois cream.
I am not sure whether to dread or look forward to it.
pcad?
