Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Power Tap for winter training ........

Anyone here use Power Taps?

I am thinking of buying one for use over the winter, on the trainer and rollers.

Get a closer zeroing in on training zones and ramp up more seriously for next year.

What I am thinking, if I do this is just get one of the wired units - shouldn't make any difference if it's just used indoors.

I'm wondering if anyone uses powerTap and if so, any comments on wired vs wireless**********

I would go with wireless because it will save you a lot of hassle if you want to switch the Ptap wheel/comp between bikes (even if that'll be down the line). My pick is the Pro+ model; it gives you "onboard analysis" and is much lighter than the Elite.

If you're looking for the best deal, then the Comp wheel at CC is hard to beat.

I obviously am an advocate (full disclosure - I sell them)

But thought I would give my opinion on wired vs wireless. If you have more than 1 bike or plan on using more than 1 bike then get wireless. You will eventually end up using your powertap outside as well as during races, TT's etc. Letting friends borrow it...you get what I'm saying.

The prices are reasonable for the entry level wireless units (Elite+ and Pro+) that it is something you should probably consider. The fact that they are using ANT+ to communicate means that there are all sorts of head units you can use with them. There are a lot of head unit models on the horizon as well. If you go wired you are stuck with the Saris Head unit.

My $0.02.

$1300 for the ability to use different head units and move between bikes...

I use one bike to train and money is an issue. My other bikes are a FG and a MTB.
I have a 305 edge and don't believe a 705 upgrade is worth it.
In my case I believe a comp would be fine.
I am not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I would provide another train of thought.

....Nope. There are plenty of places that you can buy them at for less than that.

That's not what I am trying to say. There are plenty of places where deals are available on powertaps.

Anyhow, I have yet to encounter any pro+ deal remotely close to $659 CC and excel sports have for the comp.
Perhaps I should start looking at the elite model.

I bought a wired PT several years ago and have had to replace the wiring harness once. I have also bought a second wiring harness for my TT bike. I should have just bought the wireless one although as I recall back then the price differential was much larger than it is now.

In many ways, a PT is more valuable indoors than it is outdoors because you eliminate most of the other variables (traffic, wind, downhills in the wrong places, etc.). I got home late tonight and did a quick 30 min Spinervals Time Saver workout - 7 x 90 second intervals with the PT (perfect winter workout for after work).

My best winter routine is the 2 month CTS Progressive Power DVD Series - an 8 week power based training program. It is a little expensive but well worth it for me to keep my interest in the winter (Wisconsin).

That CC deal is for the wired version.

If you get a PT (or any power meter) you're going to want to use it most if not all of the time.

Get the book.
And you'll want to buy a copy of WKO or use GoldenCheetah to view your data.

I have the wired version on my indoor trainer bike (Cervelo Soloist). No signal reception problem at all except it is a little bit tricky to route the pick-up sensor wire harness all the way from the handle bar to the back wheel. I am using two tie wraps to secure the wire under the sloping top tube. Often time when I picked up the water bottle, accidentally the bottle would catch the wire and yank it loose. Routing along the down tube is even more challenging because of the relatively long aero section.
Something for yout to think about if you have a relatively small frame.
If I had all kinds of money I would go wireless, but I don't so I went for the cheap wired option (Ebay). Haven't took it outdoors yet to see if it affects by power lines or other RF devices.

Loving the wireless Ptap I got from Psimet after a couple of years with a wired unit.
