Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Windsor Knight for 800? good deal?

i found this bike online for 800

https://www.windsorbicycles.com/knight.html

is that a good price for it?

im new to the road bike community, and im trying to find the best deal on a road bike i can get, but they only have 50 frames, and i when i got to my lbs i found out a 48 is a pretty good size for me, would a 50 be too much off? would my ride be weird or uncomfortable?

It's from bikesdirect. Ignore the stated "MSRP" when you are trying to figure out if its good deal. It's completely inflated and has no relation to the actual selling price other than the fact that it is always way higher to make it seem like a better bike.

But hey, it's got mostly Ultegra-level components at $800. As long as you know how to service your own bikes and don't need any customer service, its probably not a bad bike to get. Search around for bikesdirect on this forum to get a better idea for what they are.

Correct. But I think if you have to ask this type of question, you are better off not buying from BikesDirect.

Buying for BD might be a good way to make that relationship worse, most LBS' don't like BD at all.

I have that same frame, it's not bad, but it's fairly heavy for an aluminum frame, my 52cm is nearly 2kg.

For $800, it's a good deal. Just make sure it fits. If you truly have a good relationship with your LBS, they should totally understand. In fact, show them the BD bike and say "You know I love you guys, but I don't print $. So here's a bike I'm considering - $800 with Ultegra - is there something you have that's comparable? Is it a good deal?" They'll probably say yes - you buy it, and get it serviced from your LBS. Nothing wrong with that.

This is sage advice. There's a good chance they'll come up with a deal for you.

I have a Windsor Fens and with my son have bought two other bikes from BikesDirect. My Fens looks to be essentially the same as the Knight, but has Shimano 105 brifters, front derailleur, and wheels. I have been riding it a lot lately and can say that it has a very smooth, stable ride, is fairly light, and has needed little maintenance since I first put it together 2 1/2 years ago.

My brother has the windsor knight, he loves it. Very awesome bike for the price. Your not gonna get anything close to the quality in that price range at any lbs

Bikes Direct has some pretty sweet deals - look at the overall package not just the frame. And compare it to your LBS, ride and decide.

Good luck.

I have a knight, and agree that the LBS and group riders will turn their nose at you. I got one when I wasn't sure I'd even like road biking. I've put 1000+ miles on it and now am looking at an upgrade from a LBS. If the LBS is smart they realize that I've spent well in excess of $2000 on other items at their store in the last year, far outweighing my BD purchase...and now I want a Trek/Pin/Can/Spec etc they're going to benefit more...

It is very hard to buy a $3k bike at the start if you aren't sure you are going to like road biking. BD gives you a good start.

Or you can go to Costco and try out their Diamondback Podium entry level road bike with Tiagra components for $499.

Then bring it to your LBS for a tune up.
