Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wtf

today i decided to do a few laps around my hood, since i was going to be close to home, never more than a mile away, i went all out, i thought i was going to have a heart attack or something, i did this, a little over 6 miles, my average speed a little over 14mph, WTH! i've done almost 80 miles at that average and felt just fine when i got home. i do live in a hilly part of town, pimmit hills, but i never thought they would get me like this. did i go too hard too fast?

Next time, drink the 6-pack after your ride, not before.

You had a bad day or your nutrition was inadequate.

Probably just a bad day.

Gremlins.

Dey R En Ur wEelz - stln Ur speed.

Seriously the shorter a circuit the more slowing at intersections/and for cornering there can be. Didn't hat will reduce your speed tremendously.

Low air in the tires, maybe? Its getting cold in the NE- maybe the cold or humidity was dragging you down a bit, and you're still thinking in terms of your speeds in the summer?

Did you feel that you were in the same gears you usually find yourself in, at any given point?

+1 on the nutrition. The more I pay attention, the more I realize that my bad days are not bad bike days, they're bad eating days.

Also, you should have just gone faster. That would bring your average speed up.

I agree. I usually do not fully warm up until at least 10 miles. Terrain can drop your average in a hurry. In a Duathlon in June my bike average was 19.2 over 10 miles and there were some good hills. In October in a Triathlon I really trained hard and had a 4 pound lighter bike and my average went to 16.8 over 12 miles. I was a faster and stronger rider in October, but there were multiple challenging climbs (one was over a mile) that knocked my average down.

i did notice a low front tire, but didnt think that would affect me that much, it was mid 60s here, not cold at all...

gears were all over the place, with the change in terrain and all

164 feet of climbing? That's not even A hill, let alone a hilly ride.

164 feet (at say 5%) would be a decent hill. Maybe a 2 or 3 minute climb depending on your fitness. But for an entire ride? That's not hilly.

Nuh-uh...Mine are REALLY hilly. I swear there are some on our rides that are like 2 or 3 overpasses put together. It's like they'll never end.

BTW....what's this left shifter for?

Falls church. Just 'round the corner. Not very hilly.

you want hilly, come to prince williams county, it gets very hilly here, and hilly'r the more you go west, until you hit the Mount VountSHenadoahValley.

As for your ride, 14 mph isn't bad, I couldn't avg that well with my broken down denali even when I used the Big Ring,(I usually stick to the middle ring and spin fast). That being said relax and keep cycling, the more you do it the better your heart will be the better your speed will be and all the good other stuff come with time.

what a coincidence! I just had my worst ride in a long time today. I narrowed it down to nutrition. Couldn't find out for the life of me why I only averaged 19 mph for 12 miles... I can regularly hold 21 or so for 20 or 25 miles. I just felt weak, still the best part of the day was on the bike!
