Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yet another music thread

No, not what music you listen to on your ipod - plenty of threads there already.

More specifically - when you are in a world of serious hurt while riding, what are your favorite songs that help you keep pushing through the pain? Please post just a few favorites.

For me, it is "Push the Tempo" by Fatboy Slim and "Sandstorm" by Darude - honorable mention to Tiesto "Parade of the Athletes" and "Control" by Halcyon.

Agreed on Maiden - I have "Run to the Hills" in my PUSH playlist and at some point, I need to rip Stranger in a Strange Land from CD as well.

Cool stuff - this reminded me to pull out my RATM CDs after a long while - will also hunt down Infected and give it a listen.

As you can see, I am trying to get some ideas on new music as I somehow seem to have ended up in the "music was better back in my days" camp.

I also love sandstorm, however the "lull" fudges me up every time. Tiesto is generally pretty good for me. Hard rock has too low a BPM for me.

My Cycling Playlist contains about 250 songs played in shuffle mode. When I'm in a world of serious hurt while riding, say going up a hill, I'm not inclined to search for a specific song. Rather, I select my tunes so that any song will do, although of course some pump me up more than others. I wrote previously:

I have posted my entire cycling playlist on my Public Profile in connection with this thread, "Cycling Playlist Exchange":

https://www.bikeforums.net/fifty-plus-50/596762-cycling-playlist-exchange.html

See especially posts #'s 1 and 46 for how to do it, and let us know if you do.

Zigackly - that is why I am looking for new "push songs". Want to repopulate my "Push" playlist.

Am heading over to check that playlist of yours, cheers!

Heh, I have done too much clubbing to Sandstorm when it came out (viva Barca!) and lull doesnt bother me so much cos I know what's coming soon.

Sandstorm is a really good one I might need to add that. I fill my playlist with rap and techno because they are really fast paced. Trust me though I don't act on any of the things they talk about. It just has a beat that I can keep a good tempo too and some of them make me want to go faster.

Depends on what tempo I'm going for grinding cadence calls for a heavier and slower beat while fast cadence calls for something quicker. A few decent numbers have been mentioned in this thread. I'd add

Rage Against the Machine - Wake up
Atreyu - Becoming the Bull
Black Sabbath - Children of the Sea

It's all about industrial for me as well.
Front Line Assembly - Buried Alive or Beneath The Rubble. The album Artificial Soldier is really accessible, and will **** you.)
Dismantled - The Last Excuse (highly recommended) Outside of that, the self titled album will **** you.)
Anything made by Imperative reaction after 2002 (Minus All will **** you.)
Anything made by Pig/Raymond Watts, especially after 1999 (the album Pigmata from 2005 will **** you.)
Anything made by OhGr (SunnyPsyOp will **** you.)
Skinny Puppy's "The Greater Wrong of the Rights" in general...will **** you.
Psyclon Nine - almost any song but The Serpent Tongue and The Widowmaker especially. the album "We the Fallen" is really good, for raping you.
The list goes on.
Jesus I love music.

OK vk,

Though this is like choosing who is my favorite child, I made an arbitrary limit of ten songs and selected my ten top "push songs" out of 250. It could change at any time.

Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy Andrews Sisters
Stars and Stripes Forever John Phillip Sousa
Gonna Fly Now (Theme from "Rocky") Bill Conti
Stumblin' In Chris Norman & Suzi Quatro
Feelin' Stronger Every Day Chicago
Hold On Tight Electric Light Orchestra Part II
You're the One That I Want Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta
Gimme Shelter Rolling Stones
My Old School Steely Dan
Eye of the Tiger Survivor

Well , I can't say that I really ride in a state of seriously hurt, unless you include my condition after I was ejected from my bike by an errant pine cone lodged by my cassette a few weeks ago, however I do like to "push it". That's when I listen to:
Pump it Up - Elvis Costello
Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails
Nemesis - Ministry
Blue Monday - New Order
Are You Going to Go My Way - Lenny Kravitz
Whammer Jammer - J. Giles Band
This is old stuff, yet it does the trick.

People actually listen to music while riding?

In traffic I listen for cars, on the road I enjoy the silence.
