Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone else intentionally speed up when they see a cyclist in front of them who you know will overtake eventually, even without speeding up? I love to blow by them just a little faster than I would have normally.

Better scenario: anyone else intentionally speed up when they see a cute girl on her daily run? How hard do you have to peddle to get the veins in your legs to pulsate?

I've had this happen in the reverse. I was on a ride and turning right on another street when I spotted a couple cycling ahead of me. As I started to close the gap, one of them turned around and saw me and they slowly started speeding up.

Eventually I caught them but then they turned off before I could say hi.

Yes. I am a jerk.
Catch up to the other rider, speed up, and cheerfully say hi as you pass riding no handed eating a sandwich.

I slow down. and either turn or wait for them to turn. 9/10 times they want to race me, or they stink.

Forget the veins. I'd slow down so I could watch for a few more seconds...

Do it all the time, I like being a cocky jerk on my bike for some reason and it motivates me to ride harder through out my whole ride. Ive done it to some of the wrong people who are in way better biking shape than me and have had my doors blown off to.

Too bad, I always lost..

I will speed up at the point of over -taking to keep them from latching on to my back wheel.. why am I using race tactics on riders that are unaware that they are in a race?

To the OP, no, but a hearty YES to this one. Well, except for the pulsating vein thing. Just flex the calves a little extra. It is the cycling equivalent of pulling up to a stop sign in your car next to a hottie and either turning your music up a little or rolling your windows down further, or both. At least in high school

Ha! I try to pass everyone I see!! The real trick is to slow down yer breathing so it looks like you are hardly trying. Then you can give 'em a nice hearty "Good morning" without sounding like you're gasping for air.

No, not normally. (I do slow down for some joggers though )
I have sped up to catch someone I thought I knew only to find out it was a tourist. Rode with him, chatted for a few and then went on my way.

You guys are silly. I catch men behind me sometimes who could easily pass me, but they hang back for some reason....

Nope, it's crude and rude. It's much more friendly to be nice.

In the end, nice is the only thing that mattered.

I kind of do that. But I see a cute roadie girl on a bike and speed up and start drafting behind her. Sometimes I need motivation to finish my ride. Taking in a breather and the sites gets me back up so to speak and then I can continue.
