Rust on bolt heads - can I replace the bolts to something better

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Rust on bolt heads - can I replace the bolts to something better

Hi guys, I have noticed some rust forming in the head of some bolts that hold together the brake pads and others. I am assuming this is because of the times I have gotten caught in the rain or ridden over a wet street.

My question is, can these bolts (the ones that came with my Allez) be replaced / upgraded with Ti- or alum or some other bolts that do not corrode? or is this just a maintenance item that will need to be replaced every year or so?

Most likely you want Stainless Steel bolts and hardware. Ti or Alum are not good fasteners for this application.

Replacing your calipers to get new bolts is a bit overkill. Try here: https://www.mcmaster.com/#machine-screws/=4xj2go

It's where you live, just the humidity and salt air will rust bolts, particularly if they're scuffed.

Ti bolts work fine. I have them on stems for this reason.

Also, you can put petroleum jelly, or wax inside the head of the bolts, or you can just live with the rust.
