identifying a lemond road frame
 

I have a bought a freshly painted by Lizart Lemond road frame. Previous owner didn't know the model although the serial # is as follows:

WTU2250601P

280 57 TB11311


Does anyone know what model this is? I'm pretty sure the "57" refers to the size (since it does measure out to be a 57cm frame)

Other hints would help my curiosity. Thanks!

Well I do not know them by serial number, but how about a picture and we can start from there.

The first identifier will be obvious - is it aluminum, Ti, steel, spine, OCLV, AC/DC, etc...regular or compact geometry...
Then the shape of the frame will tell us more, and with some frame dimensions the geometry tables can be looked up in most cases to narrow it down further.

All that I can say here is that you have picked up quite a unique frame set, or not. I am familiar with post-Trek-aquisition of this brand to a small extent. I think that this is pre-Trek. Note the pump peg. Note also the funky swaged seat tube. I don't know one way or another. Hopefully, some old-school Lemondian riders chime in. Good luck, I like the paint job.

ohh...thanks for the clues. If i remember correctly, weren't most of the pre-trek bikes also made in the US?

I would say pre-Trek for sure however, I want to say all Trek products used to begin their model numbers with "WTU".

Most Lemonds were still made in the US after the Trek aquisition.

Some frames -- like my steel "GAN" frame -- came with internal cable routing, which will maybe help to eliminate some options.

Of course, I can't remember what year mine is (mid-90's?), and it's back in Maryland right now...

Early Lemonds were made by Roland Della Santa in Reno, by Scapin and imported by Ten Speed Drive Impors, and by the Billato Brothers in Italy. Yours is not one of these due to the WTU in the serial number

Bingo - my thoughts too. The shape of the fork on it also resembles the Icon Air Rail found on Lemonds and Treks of that time. So yes, a post-Trek frame, made in USA by Trek in Waterloo, WI.

And for the pump peg comment - Lemonds came with pump pegs right up to the end. They just weren't on smaller sizes with insufficient room on the head tube.

yep, definitely a zurich.

and whomever stripped that frame needs to be shot.

uh oh, the paint is so soft on these I'm considering stripping mine and having it powder coated. Could care less about what it looks like, what matters to me is how it rides and protecting the frame from rust. Please don't shoot me!
