You know, just because it is colder where you are doesn't make it warmer here. I just want the cold gone, otherwise what good is it living here? I might as well move to Colorado!!!

That's what makes it so enjoyable to give you crap about it. You live in America's butt crack, where the only good thing is the warmth. And you believe it's cold!

Yea, seriously, humans aren't meant to live in SD. That's why there are so few there...

bmxsykes 01-11-10 07:56 AM

As a 2nd generation native Floridian I'm a lot more adapted to the warm weather as you are the cold. I just don't have any fun when my finger tips and toes are stinging. Yes, I have winter gloves and toe covers. I guess I'm just not in it to win it.

No desire to. That's why we live where we do. I'm sure we'll here about how HOT it is if you get an equivelant heatwave this summer.

I think the very same can be said about Nebraska. The smart settlers kept on going west.... Seriously though, once all of the snow melts and spring arrives, we are going to appreciate riding.

Nobody from Saskatchewan complains about being to hot. Even at 40C.
But its all over the news about "extreme cold" in Florida.

sci_femme 01-11-10 01:07 PM

Yes, it is cold. Yes, my spider lilies have wilted and turned pretty disgusting shade. Yes, I have not been in the saddle for a week. Withdrawal is tough....

Meanwhile our so-called friends up north are high-fiving themselves and HTFUing us.

Fine.

Let's see - come July - how many of these northerners would be willing to head out into 100+ temps and 100% humidity into the traffic in the middle of concrete expanse? Who's HTFU now?

My lilies will recover.

SF

p.s. dgas - hats off to your wife!!

Tell Al G. to load up the bears on the polar ice caps and send them down here. Global Warming missed this part of the world.

stonecrd 01-11-10 01:46 PM

Well it's cold enough that I finally broke down and bought a trainer. Good news is that this will guarantee a quick end to the cold weather.;)

Because you get it for months there yearly and we don't get this for more than a day or two every 10-20 years!!

I'm with you dgasmd , Tired of the cold here in Central Florida too. Was 25 last night. I've been off the bike a week or so now too and I am going stir crazy. Tried riding a week ago in 39 degree weather, but with the wind chill and lack of proper Winter Gear (It is Florida People) I froze, took a day to thaw out. So I am waiting with excitement the 74 degree weather coming this weekend. Yeah! I knew allot of people who ran the marathon and it was COLD. I mean we had freaking snow fluries the day before. Anyway, I'm with ya, get this cold out of here!

Since PCad hasn't chimed in, my 12 year old son says HTFU.;) He rode yesterday when the high was 37F. We left the house before it got out of the twenties.

See, it can be done; my first winter rides were with a $20 fleeced top from Target, and it worked.

Nobody knows for sure yet but there's some bad feelings for citrus and especially for vegetables like tomatoes from S.FLA. A day or 2 in the 40s or even upper 30s is not all that rare but the better part of 2 weeks of lows in the 30s and upper 20s is unusual and very bad for the agriculture.

That and I don't like it. My first year of college was in Kansas but that's a long time ago and I don't like the cold.

jediphobic 01-11-10 10:17 PM

I've always thought the northern midwest got the worst weather year round. In the winter it's not unusual to get down to -20F or so, and in the summer it usually sits in the 90's and over a hundred is not particularly odd. So, bitter cold, and the heat is nothing to scoff at either.

I'm reminded of this because I'm home visiting the folks, and it hit -30F at the end of last week. Just as well I didn't bring a bike.

7F with 4 feet deep snow in the backyard in north PA

So last winter I had driven from Illinois to NY round trip about 5 times in a matter of a few months and by far, of any place I've lived in the USA, PA has the worst winter driving conditions. It tops Illinois and S Dakota. Christmas eve 08, route 80 across PA's span was a sheet of ice, took me 23 hours to drive what should take no more than 13.

I tip my hat to you.
Honorable mention to Minnesotans for the cold they endure.

jdott 01-11-10 10:29 PM

For a cold day: thin socks, wool socks, chemical heaters, slipstreams, windproof booties. SS base layer, wool base layer, arm warmers, LS jersey, vest, jacket. Balaclava, hat with ear covers. Bibs, knee warmers, thermal tights. wool liner gloves and either windproof gloves or lobster claws depending. Good luck getting to anything in your pockets. Count on a frozen water bottle before you attempt to take your first drink. what sucks, is it doesn't make sense for you guys to get enough cold weather gear to handle this spell. Good luck, it will pass.
