@ Split Saddle owners
I'm looking into purchasing a split saddle, specifically the Selle SMP, and am curious what peoples reactions are to the full split saddle (i.e. connected only at the rear and nose). According to Sheldon Brown, split saddles can compromise control, and must be angled downwards, placing undue stress on wrists etc.

Sheldon is talking about a different saddle. One that has essentially no nose at all. What you are talking about is a cut-out saddle which is a completely different animal. I have had good success with cut out saddles as long as they are the proper width for your sit bones.

After trying a Selle SMP for a week, I bought three. One for each of my bikes. I'll never use another saddle ever again.

The Selle SMP saddles are great.
As are the Specialized Toupe and Romin.
FWIW - I had "comfort problems" with the SMP saddle, and my shop told me it isn't the perfect solution for everyone.
I've found the Specialized saddles work best for me, and at a considerable savings over the SMP Evolution.
Most LBS have demo saddles so you can see what best works for you.
