Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Armed robbery at my LBS

The local news just reported that my LBS was the victim of an armed robbery today. A guy walked in with a gun and took an $11,000 Pinarello Dogma 60.1. Crazy. Here is some footage of the theft:

Bikes: Steel

Clearly the robber had no idea what he was looking for.

No taste at all.

Bikes: I hate bikes.

The funny thing is there is absolutely nothing he can do with it now, perhaps with the exception of part out everything in a year or 2. The frame is as good as dead to him, if he tries to sell it, he will get caught, if he tries to ride it, he will get caught. lol, fail.

The guy didn't even hang around for a proper fitting from the shop.

he'd be better off stealing a box of group sets or wheels even. at least he could sell that crap.

Bikes: n, I would like n+1

It would have been better to steal (or even one) of something more common like a nice Trek. At least that could be sold easily.

We can be on the lookout for a "look at my fit" thread with a guy on a Pinarello.

This is as funny as the guy a few weeks ago I heard about that held up a bank and wrote the holdup note on the back of his business card.

Darwin in action...

Yeah, but we know from endless threads that the warranty sucks because it only extends to the original "owner".

Probably already in a container bound for Eastern Europe. I always got a kick out of seeing Texas or California plates on vehicles driving the streets of Moscow. A staus symbol.

The bike would be fenced easily and without question.

This is the way we amateurs think. Professional criminals have ways and resources we know nothing about.

Sure, a some of them are idiots . . . but a lot of them are smart enough to profit from their profession and never get caught.

this is clearly an art market theft to order. first the scream then the pinarello.

no intention of selling it. someone with extremely large bank account and very very bad taste wants the pinarello.

perhaps the robber has a fantasy about destroying a high end bicycle with a chain saw, or fire ax, or wood chipper, or flame thrower.

let's keep an eye on youtube...

The next guy I see on a Pinarello Dogma is getting his butt kicked. I'll ask questions after the beating.

There was a similar incident in Charlotte NC a couple of years ago. Thief walked in the LBS and out the door with a Prince ---- got him on video too. To my knowledge he was never apprended. Lp

I really hope that they are going to get busted. They are stupid enough to spend an a hour at the shop looking for a the most expensive bike and totally overlooked presence of the security cameras.

read the comments below the actual footage, some of them are quite interesting. Oh how I love the confusion that 11k price tags on a bike and how it affects peoples perceptions and the different comparisons of things they could buy with that kind of money. Also that guy was a total jerk and just pushed his way out of the store. It would be funny if he went and registered the bike's serial number lol.
