Here's an analogy: when the thugs come a-calling, would you rather have a single shot rifle or an AR-15 with a 30 round magazine?*

I'd rather have a 12ga shotgun and a couple of frags, so what's your point?

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
I would point out that is is also a device with a single gearing that can be dialled up to frightening speed.

But more gears means more speeds! If I have 3x10 gears, I must be 30 times faster than a FG, right?

idk....my fixed gear still gets up to 30+mph.....I just have to work harder. Which I thought this all was about, but I guess not.
Fixed gear for fun, commuting, and training.
Geared for racing and training.

This is obviously a statement about fixie culture, not mechanics. Yes, some trends are made annoying by those who indulge in them, but I have seen some real fun had on fixed gear bikes. I don't have the knees for them myself, but they are more practical/safer to me when they include a front brake, considered a copout by purists. I do like my coaster brake roadie, though. No frozen cables or rim buildup in the Anchorage wintertime. People have their own reasons to ride what they do. It took me years of riding "stupid" bikes to learn what my ideal rides are. Just let 'em rip, they're going to be forty-something someday too - unless they are hit by a bus...

Someone in the bike industry commented on single speeds.
"It just means I'm in the wrong gear 95% of the time." Which isn't technically accurate, since maybe you're riding where that one gear is the correct gear. But I'll paraphrase his comment.
"It just means you have a 95% chance of being in the wrong gear."

When I lived in Savannah which is flat as a pancake, but far less appealing than one - I commuted around on a 1979 Murray coaster brake bike - pictured here for your amusement:
I will tell you though, that 100% of the times I rode it, I was 100% in the right gear for what I needed to do.
The good thing about the one speed bike, is assuming it came with reasonable gearing from the factory, it's probably more likely to have the rider in the "correct" gear than a multi-speed bike. Novices seem for some reason to always want to put bikes into the tallest gears, so a lot of the time on a multi-speed bike, a rider will be in the wrong gear 100% of the time...

Fixed gears seem silly to me, as do 11-speed cassettes. But it's downright stupid to buy a bike marketed for "touring" that has 20 spokes up front and 24 in the rear. Carbon bottle cages and carbon spacers are also pretty dumb if you pay more for them than aluminum ones.

Easily the most moronic bicycling fad are those stupid rubber biscuits that turn up in forks and seatstays. Trek calls them "Buzz Kill" and that's a term I always understood to mean "take the fun out of something" or "spoil the party". Their marketing literature compares them to similar devices used on compound hunting bows. Next time I use my fork to shoot an arrow into a bear from a tree stand, I'll be glad my bike has these. Total junk science. If it really worked, Lance would have these goofy gizmos on his bike.

Not a good analogy. Though a person with a single shot would almost definitely lose to the thugs, Im sure there are quite a few people here who can outride a large number geared riders with a single speed on a typical group ride.

at least not everyone is a ****** riding road biker,
the one thing I can say about fixed riders, at least they re not judgmental when you show up, no matter what you re on as long as its got two wheels.
I ve recently thought about getting into a geared bike but I always seem to run into the pretentious, better than thou, cockheads who think that unless you ride the latest specialized or trek geared bike you re some damn hipster-wannabe for enjoying something else.
