Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I am I the only one get hammered this winter cycling season

I mean, I can take on the low weather days but snow is screwing my winter up, I live in northern va, the last 5 years have had little snow and so far I have been getting screwed by the snow. We are expecting 2 - 3 ......

... ****in FEET. **** me man, I lost my winter break because of the 18 inches of snow we had in my winter vacation schedule, now this. I feel trapped in my house. I want to cycle so bad too. I wonder what everyone else thinks of all this stupid snow.

I am becoming a muscle builder thou, that snow shoveling sure does a job on the upper body.

Tour de France videos and the trainer. I hate it but that is what I will be doing tomorrow morning.

I don't want to get a mtn. bike just to ride in the snow because it doesn't snows enough in NY to hinder my riding, relatively speaking.

I just got back from a run in the snow. Beats hitting the rollers. By tomorrow there will be too much snow even for that though.

I moved 600 miles south in January and thought I'd be fine leaving my rollers behind. Nope, been raining and snowing here in NC for the last week. Haven't been on a substantial ride in a week. I'm fearing how much it's going to hurt when I get back out there. Rain and snow today, more of the same tomorrow.

I wish I had packed my rollers

Haha, I'm loving how much it's snowing in DC.

Of course, this fall I moved to Oregon after 10 years there. And will be moving back in July, when it's nice again.

I got some Nokian Extremes for the MTB / beater. On ice, wow these tires grip! In deep snow, okay. I wouldn't take my road bike out in winter crud. Do you know what salt can do to a drivetrain? MTBs are made for abusive riding.

Looks like Lance might be getting hammered, if he drinks enough michelob.

But seriously, this winter has really sucked, weather-wise. I don't mind the cold but can't ride if the roads are snowy/icy....I was planning a semi-epic ride for saturday but obviously that is not happening. I may go cross-country skiing instead, but it's not nearly as much fun as cycling IMO.

I had sinusitis followed by strepp throat followed by pneumonia. That is "getting hammered" Been off the bike and trainer and gym for two months and my legs feel like mush. Just getting good enough feeling that I may do a nice easy ride tomorrow. No snow at my place near Toronto.

While not a huge fan of winter, cold and snow I enjoy the break from riding every day.
I was a runner before a rider and during the winter months I run, lift weights, walk, etc. I've come close to buying a cross country ski kit or snow shoes...I've tons of open area right outside my door for skiing or shoeing.
It makes riding season much more enjoyable because it is not a year long activity.
I have decided not to ride my "trainer" this winter as a lark. I've always been a slave to the trainer doing endless 2 hour sessions but this year I've decided to run instead and find myself enjoying the experience much more.

This winter has stopped about 50% of my ride attempts, not too bad considering I didn't really ride at all last winter.

I've got my fingers crossed it won't snow too much that way I can commute to work next week; I'm not a fan of left over snow and ice patches.

Yes, same over in here. Winter is really cramping my style. Since just prior to Christmas we've about had a week combined of passable riding days.

1. Move to Australia ... I haven't seen snow since September and only way up in the mountains
2. Get a trainer or rollers
3. Join a spinning class
4. Participate in winter sports
5. Join a gym

Or DVT ... that took me out of the running for a long time this past winter.

hahaha...You guys gotta move north of the border...

Hamilton has had a total of 10" of snow this winter...Personally I think that's an over-estimation...

Currently there is exactly zero or zilch snow on the ground...

This has been the bloody weirdest winter I can remember...No snow, but still cold...

Of course the days are still short so I'm stuck on the trainer after work and I just keep on it for the weekends. Hopefully this month I'll be venturing out a bit, but of course that's when the snow will probably arrive...

Suck it up, son. Now you know how we northeasterners live.

You southerners are getting the weather we usually get . . . and we're missing it. That feels soooo good!

Move to Southern California! We're crying in agony because we got 3 inches of rain yesterday, which makes the roads too slick for softies like myself.

I lived for 30 years on the East Coast. In terms of weather, CA is ridiculously nice, and amazing for cycling. The budget deficit and real estate prices will kill you though.
