Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Maps or directions for new routes. How do you do it?

When you're planning to ride a new route, someplace you haven't done before, how do you carry or attach the directions so you know where to turn, how far to travel on each leg, etc? We're planning to try a couple of new routes that have lots of turns and we're trying to figure out how to attach the directions for easy reference so we stay on track. I offered to staple them to my buddy's back and ride behind him to call out the turns but he's pretty adamant about finding an alternative.

Thanks for any insights you might have.

There are lots of different cue sheet holders out there. Here's one: https://www.cueclip.com/

You can tape or zip tie one of those black metal paper clips to your stem. It's pretty Fredly, but I've done that before. You can always just use an index card in your pocket, but that can be a PITA sometimes.

Then again, you could always get a Garmin.

Another fast, fredly alternative: attach with clothespins to front cables.

I use www.ridewithgps.com to plan the route and produce and print the cue sheet and map (FREE!) Within the next few weeks they plan to have the ability to sync the route on to a Garmin. I look forward to riding in upstate NY this summer with routes from RWGPS on my new Garmin 305.

I also carry my Palm Treo 680 that has Tom Tom Navigator 6.0 on it. It as full turn by turn maps and directions, but the route planning, even the "biking" choice, is never quite what I would like. But it can really help in a pinch.

Finally, I keep a map in a plastic bag for the real emergency. Coupled with the GPS I can figure out where I am, and plan a route ad hoc.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. I opted for putting the directions in a plastic ziplock baggie and clipping it to the cables. Seems pretty stable.

If you shorten those route directions up a bit (just put turn R or L and road name) you can tape them in a roll around your top tube. Scroll it around as you go.

I am/will be the cue sheet holder on our tandem. My wife wants to attach the cue sheet to the back of my jersey. We also have a Garmin 705, but no excuse for not having a backup.

I fold routeslips up and stick them in the gripper of my shorts. Then forget about them and drop them into toilets. Then follow other people.
