Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First attempt at century.Fail

Went out today with the intention of getting as many miles as possible. Did not count in the headwind on the way back. To any locals this was in preparation for the Jalapeño 100 this weekend.

San Juan-McCook(two laps)
90 miles
5:40hrs
15mph wind
19-21 wind gusts. I cried.
3700 calories
15.66avg speed
21.1mph max
71cadence
Also, chamois butt'r does work

And assuming that you rode in a loop, you must have had some backwinds too. How come you only rode 21.1mph max?

71 RPM?

why do you hate your knees?
What do you mean? Because they really did hurt awhile after the ride.

I started from my house at 6:30am, relatively no wind. 34 miles later I was in mccook. (Did two laps there.) North from starting point. Wind was SSE. Going back home I was going right into the wind.

Machka

What exactly does it do?
Keeps me nice and comfy.

Your cadence seems low. Higher cadence is better for the knees.

Riding your first century to prepare for a century later in the week seems like a lot.

You'll be fine at the organised ride, the crowd is worth 10 miles easily, especially if you draft!

71 is a really low cadence.

I've wondered that too. After 30 years of riding & racing, the only chamois that needed any help was the old school leather chamois way back when.

As for cadence, try for 90-100

It's about right... I did 2000-odd calories for my last 100km ride, based on my PT.

Probably an average cadence, with some coasting cadence rates bringing it down. I ride 85 to 95 cadence, but my garmin tells me I have an average cadence of 76.

I think a couple rides of 50 to 70 miles and a lot of shorter rides are good preparation. I agree with the others about your cadence. Keep it high and you'll ride farther and feel better.

after a long ride my meter usually reads an average of about 70-80 rpm, coasting/slowing to stop/speeding to cruising speed contributes to dropping my average even though i'm usually around 90-105rpm while cruising.

this is usually the case when I ride. dunno if it's the same for the OP.

why did you write "fail" cuz you didn't clock 100 miles? that's OK. I have a route that gets me 88 miles and sometimes I want to rack up the extra miles but when I see my car I fade and tell myself 88 is just fine. this summer I'm gonna do a 60 mile rail trail both ways and hope to crank up the full 120 miles. basically I'm gonna go 60 miles and turn around, you know? then there will be no choice but to get the full mileage in - even if the last 30 miles are slow.

I currently use Bag Balm because it doesn't dissolve, but it is messy and requires a good hot wash cycle to come clean. I am open to suggestions, but I do NOT want another water-soluable waste of time.

I'm not sure where the "fail" comes in.

If you're not making the distance, backing off a bit on the speed could help.

Not to make this about me, but I burn 4,000+ on a 26 mile ride, albeit with many hills. Am I reading this right, that we are talking miles, not km?

I reckon an about 600 calories ann hour so a 6 hour ride seems about right. But For a century ride I do carbo load before hand- aswell as drink as much as possible the day before and at least 1 litre an hour on the ride.

Coasting can account for a lower average cadence- But if you hadn't coasted so much- you may have done the hundred.

Someone has already mentioned it but the group ride will be easier. Just don't join a group that is just a bit too fast.

Bloody hell- How much weight do you gain on a ride**********

You must be calling into my local cafe and working your way through the menu.

sounds fishy. i think i've seen estimates of about 6,000 for 100 miles. obviously depends on how long and body weight but 4,000 is much too much for 26 miles.
