Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Average Speed

Hey guys, just wanted to know, how fast are your average speeds on a typical ride.

I know that the distance of the ride affects the average speed, also climbing and wind and what not, but what is a generally O.K. average speed?

And if you race, tell me how fast your average speed is.

Just wondering, because I want to know if I'm going too slow, or rushing too fast.

Thanks a whole lot!

what's typical?

fast day on the 4 mile commute - 18 mph, including wait for lights.
last solo century - 15.5 mph

once I let my average go for a year and got 12.5 mph - soooo slow.

I haven't raced in forever, but I do remember an average from a 62 mile race came out to 28mph and I finished in the second group, maybe 10 mins off the lead, IIRC. Point to point road race, all cats. Almost completely flat. There was one 200ft bump to climb over. A couple of nasty wind sections, but not bad.

Average schmaverage

It may count for something in running or other sports, but is pretty meaningless in cycling.

You don't need those. They are useful tools, but many of us progressed quite far in racing without them. (not that we wouldn't have benefitted)

Anyway, go on fast group rides. Find a club. Find people faster and more experienced than you.

Seriously, don't overthink things.
If you're just starting out, ride lots, rest lots, repete.
Get a good training manual that uses HR instead of power and set up some workouts.
Incorporate some group rides once you understand the basic mechanics of paceline riding.

And enjoy yourself!

I average 22 posts per day.

Of course I've been slacking off lately.

But this thread inspires me.
