Proprietary issues with Klein?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Proprietary issues with Klein?

Hi,

Posted this in the mechanics section, but I'm thinking I should have posted it here.

I'm thinking of purchasing a used Klein Quantum Race as my first road bike. The seller is pretty sure it's the 2001 model (that's when he purchased it). The bike is in good condition, but I'm concerned about whether it has a proprietary headset/stem. The seller thinks it's standard, but he didn't seem too sure. My understanding is that Klein switched from proprietary to standard at some point, but I haven't been able to find out when. I want to swap the drops out for a mustache bar (aiming for a Bridgestone XO-1 kinda thing for commuting), and don't want to run into any unexpected headaches. Anyone know what the deal is?

Also, prices seem to be all over the place with these, but what would you pay?

Thanks,
James

Hey there,
I have a 99 Quantum Pro and it has the Klein headset. If you're unsure then google "diablo scott" who has a good blog and is a Klein guru of sorts. I believe he's also a BF member.
email him, he should be able to help you out.
Cheers
Steve
