Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Merlin Road Bike???? Good deal????

Merlin Road Bike

Extra light Vandermark Merlin road bike 53 cm
Ultegra components 16 speed
EMS carbon fork
Syntace aerobars
Mavic reflex wheels
Original owner

If this bike is in decent shape, is $850 a good price? How can I tell for sure that it is really titanium--I'm no expert, and scammers abound! Thanks

Didn't you just buy a Wally World bike? Or are you just building up a stable?

I'd at least look at the bike, sounds okay.

Should have engraved Merlin markings somewhere, which would confirm Ti. As long as the headset isn't f'd (probably not integrated), could be a nice deal. I'd probably ditch the drivetrain and the fork - if it's all original stuff and it's labeled Vandemark, it's pretty old. Not sure I would rely on a fork from the mid 90s that I didn't know anything about.

Thanks--I think my long-range plan is to get all the components I like on the Wally bike, then get some super kind of frame and transfer them over and maybe use the wally frame as a doorstop. Actually I think it's a pretty nice frame, but the paint scheme leaves me cold. Maybe a franklinframe paintjob would be in order . . .
