Are you trying to fit a front wheel or rear wheel ? If you have a 700c rear with a big fat tire on it might not fit. Try the front to confirm.

I suppose the best method would be to measure from dropout to the brake bridge and compare with another bike.

I have an older bike at home too, an '86 Raleigh Marathon. I'll be trying to fit the rear wheel of that tonight. It might fit, and with that I might be able to get another old road bike from ebay or something, and use that to donate its wheels and maybe some other parts. I'd like a 2.8 in my collection.
