Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Speedplay X series vs. Zeros

It ssems that everyone recommending Speedplays always recommends the Zero's over the X series.

In fact in Speedplay's marketing, it seems that the X series has become a "legacy" system. (Speedplay recommends the X pedals for die hard X users.)

My question is whether there is enough advantage to the Zero's to switch? (which would mean 4 new sets of pedals)

The purpoted advantages: 1) cleats less sucseptible to dirt, 2) the ability to limit float (which I don't care about).

Any other advantages to the Zeros over the X series?

no. i've owned both, and both are very good.

also, dont let speedplay or anyone else confuse you. if you get zero cleats they WILL work with X-series pedals. i did this for a while, and i got the advantage of the upgrades cleat while using my old pedals.

The cleat design is much better. That's worth it right there, and if they are cross-compatible (I wouldn't know), then even better.

just for the record i have only successfully tested zero cleats with x pedals, NOT x cleats with zero pedals, so i dont know about that part. but i agree, the zero cleat is much better.

I had a pair or two of the X series, and it seemed like the spring in the cleat would bind up much more easily than the flat version in the Zeros. I was always lubricating it or fiddling around with screw tightness.

With the Zero cleats, unless I go walking in mud or something, I never mess with them.

I have wondered about their cross-compatibility; the locked-in "groove" appears to be the same. The Zero has the little depressions in the pedal surface at 45 degree angles, my guess would be that these are to give you some "feel" to the unclipping process by forcing the spring to ride up these depressions as you rotate your foot. If they unclip OK, I don't think you'd hurt anything doing some mix'n'match..or you could home modify your X pedals with a dremel tool.

According to speedplay they're not cross compatible:

"Can I use Light Action cleats or X Cleats with my Zero pedals?
No. Light Action cleats and X cleats cannot be used with Zero pedals, and Zero cleats cannot be used with Light Action or X pedals. Only use Zero cleats with Zero pedals."

Now that could be a manufacturer being overly conservative.

If I could use Zero cleats on pedals, I'd definitely give the Zeros a try. Buying one set of Zeros is one thing, buying 4 is another.

I know for sure that zero cleats work on LA pedals.

If it makes a difference, there are rebuild kits for the X pedal, but not for Zero.

Has anyone tried to use X rebuild kits to rebuild Zero pedals?

quite sure the only thing that's different are the pedal bodies themselves.

there are three sets of bearings on the zero series. from inside to outside, pin (not replaceable, unless the pedal body is changed), cartridge ball large, cartridge ball small.

the flat section before the tapering is where the pin bearings are and the double ball bearings are at the tip with the steps
