Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2005 Trek 5200 price - Starting road biking need some help

Hello,
I'm going from mountain biking to road bike racing. I have found a 2005 trek 5200 in great condition. The groupset was changed last year with a shimano ultegra sl 10.

He's asking 2 000$ can. Am I getting ripped? I think I am...

If so, any suggestions ?

Cheers,

Thanks. Yes I've seen this. So I can estimate that a new 5200 in 2005 was about 4 000 $ can ?

Would this give me a good value, or is it a hoax ?

2000 isn't terrible but seems slightly high for a 5 year old frame. Offer 1500 and see how far you get.

If the frame cracked the first day you rode it, you would not have any warranty.

If you bought a New Bike you would have a warranty.

No way in hell i'd pay that much. Grab a bike with rival/force for less. Check out neuvation, bikesdirect, or ebay for a new frame if you are looking to save some dough.

Good luck

I bought a 2005 Madone 5.9 with full Dura-Ace for $1600.

The frame only lasted a year before I pedaled the bottom bracket shell out of it though.

I bought a 2005 Madone 5.9 Project One with full Dura-Ace for $1600 at the end of 2008.

The frame only lasted a year before I pedaled the bottom bracket shell out of it though.

This Ultegra 5200 is not worth $2000.

You're wasting your time offering *anything* if the guy is asking $2k, but sure, $1300 is a good deal.
