Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mavic Open Pro CD????

Building myself up a new set of wheels and wanted to get the black Mavic Open Pros, but I could only find one, so i purchased a Mavic Open Pro CD to be my front. I have heard a number of differing opinions with what "CD" stands for, but I need to figure out what the heck it really is. I am 6'0, 215, am I going to be happy with the CD? How is it different than the regular open pros. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Alex

The Mavic Open Pro have a great rep. I have friend that is your weight After 16 months and about 5000 miles he is getting a creaking and popping noise from them. Seems the nipples and the rims can oxidize and then you get sound. The shop has rebuilt the wheels twice now. He is thinking about changing wheels. I will say the guy may over clean the bike and may be putting too much water in the rims and adding to the issue. I was talking with Grand Performance bike shop in St. Paul and they told me at the guys weight they would have moved him to a little more robust Mavic rim.

Just an opinion

Cheers

I believe that the CD refers to a ceramic coating on the braking surface. This coating is very tough and provides better braking in wet weather. For best results, KoolStop makes a special brake pad compound (it is green, btw) especially for ceramic rims.

There are a few choices in the Open Pro line.

CD are the brownish anodized ones. I have a set. Ceramic are a different rim.
