Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra 53/39 vs 52/39

Why is this offered in Ultegra?
Is there that much difference in the one tooth?

Maybe in the rear cogs, but I am not seeing that there would be that much difference in one tooth on the big chainring unless you race and need that little bit of extra gear inches to go just that little bit faster.

Well. I'm not racing my Roubaix anytime soon so I think the 52 should do. But If I feel like I need that extra speed I can always swap the ring.

Most likely, you will not even feel any difference from 53 to 52.

Well a 52 is necessary to max out your gearing for junior racing anyway/

If you like to mash, get the 53 and you'll be a champ. If you like to ride with more suppleness, get the 52 and you will spin up a storm.

Isnt the 52 a compact crank (110mm bolt diameter) vs 53 standard (130mm diameter) ?

No, a typical compact crank comes with a 50t big ring

the 52 has the same BCD as the 53. 130mm.
i guess it takes a really experienced rider to see any more than a quite minor difference.
for racing, i think a 52 chainring allows restricted riders to fall under the 26.0 feet limit where a 53 falls just over the limit or some such BS.

Turns out that these answers are correct. I guess everyone else is just jawjacking.

I like the 52 ring better then my current 53 ring, but in the races I'm doing at present I appreciate the ratios from the 53 a bit more-there's always some fool that wants to lead you out and the races I'm participating in are usually ones finishing in some very quick sprints. That said it's only for racing I like the 53 better, I have to be honest and say it's only on very few and exceptional days I can properly wind out a 52x12 in training, but in a race it's pretty common simply because of the guys prepared to be idiot's and lead out 4 or 5 guys.

**EDIT** I started racing late enough in the game that my gear restriction was a 53x12.
