radioshack ??

the other thread got me thinking.

i think i recall buying a clock radio, or some such $10 POS at radioshack a decade ago.

does anyone actually buy stuff at radioshack ?

i work in AV/IT for a hospital and find myself running down the street to buy a cable or anadaptor or power supply from time to time and i am consistently amazed at how dumb the staff always is.

its entirely routine that when i do ask for help locating something they'll get really discouraging and tell me that they wouldnt carry that something and that i'm gonna have to contact the manufacturer and order directly. so i look anyway and find what i need in no time.

like... if you dont know the answer to an inventory question, say you dont know! dont blatantly lie to me and pretend youre certain you dont have relatively common parts.

AngryScientist 04-02-10 12:49 PM

i am amazed that they are still in existence actually.

jrobe 04-02-10 12:55 PM

The rumor this week was that Best Buy was going to buy them out.

tuxbailey 04-02-10 12:56 PM

I bought some resistors and alligator clips from them last time I visited them.

We can always find a use for more alligator clips. :innocent:

My dad bought me radio controlled truck/trailer about 30 yers ago from there. Bought a few walkie/talkies around the same time, and a few other bits and pieces.

I think the last time I was in there I bought some solder, and asked for a 9 pin tube socket, they looked at me
like I just grew an arm out of my head or something. . .
was a time when RadioShack was THE place to go for components to build electronics.

I recall it being a good place to go to for science projects and hobbies.

For reference, I bought them to make this.

The last things I bought there recently were, two headphone cables for my noise-cancelling Phillips headphones and an extension cord for my laptop. They do sell quality products. I found myself going there whenever I need quality specific elctronic accesories.

EventServices 04-02-10 01:21 PM

I don't shop at RadioShack unless I need a BNC connector or an audio cable.
I don't use Kelly Benefits
I'm not signed up with United Health.
I use Jelly Belly Sport Beans.
I've been to Jittery Joe's in Athens, but I don't drink coffee.
I don't have Type 1 Diabetes
I'm in the market for a vacuum, and will likely buy a Bissell.
I have a Garmin.

In the day, I used to use Crest.

Fry's is the new RadioShack, atleast here in N.Texas. I actually bought a sound meter from them last year.

Gluteus 04-02-10 01:26 PM

It has its niche (an small one, I think).
Last year, I bought a couple of electric motors, buzzers, switches, etc, for my daughter's school project.

Mr Danw 04-02-10 01:30 PM

I have bought some electronic parts there. They are one of the few places you can get new vacuum tubes for old amps.

Tsuru 04-02-10 01:48 PM

I think they are trying to be a cellphone destination too, or something.

caloso 04-02-10 01:51 PM

I bought a headphone jack to RCA cable there recently so I could run my iPod through the big stereo.

carpediemracing 04-02-10 01:53 PM

About a week ago I bought 3 pairs of $80 radios, 1 pair of $70 radios, a few 'puter cables.

NCMTBIKER 04-02-10 01:54 PM

Never have shopped there

Fry's should finally put RadioShack out of business if they continue to expand.

Radio Shack is the number 2 retailer for cellphones nationwide.

jfmckenna 04-02-10 03:26 PM

I go there every once in a while as I build and repair electric guitars and occasionally need something like solder or a capacitor.

Back in the day I had a TRS-80, classic Radio Shack product there :D
