Bibs vs. regular cycling shorts

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bibs vs. regular cycling shorts

So I searched and the only thing I found is that people seem to prefer bibs over regular cycling shorts. Why is this? can Someone please explain the benefits? I use a Canari gel short now.

I never thought bibs would be any good----until I got a pair. They basically provide a secure fit, so your shorts won't fall down while you bend over on the bike, and overall, I think they are more comfortable. There isn't any pressure or abrasion-causing waistlines, and the straps are also very comfortable. Now I hate regular shorts.

It's a preference, and most prefer bibs. They're nice because you don't have to worry about pulling up your shorts. All my friends prefer them. I prefer shorts slightly more because my bib straps tug down on my shoulders/neck (I even got a huge size, and sewed in 2" extensions to each strap), but I still keep my one bib short in regular rotation with my shorts.

Yall must be getting regular shorts too big. My shorts stay in place once I put them on. I have to adjust my jersey during a ride, but never my shorts.

I bought bibs (Assos) after reading all the posts here and I am not sold on them over shorts. They stay up a little better but this has never been a problem for me with shorts. The problem with them for me is that they rub on my front chest and nipple area to the point where I am sore after long rides. I am always adjusting the straps to move them outward further than they are designed to be worn. I am 5' 10" and 160 lbs and have a normal body build. I am probably in the minority but from now on, I will save the extra money and just buy shorts.

I haven't had any trouble with shorts falling down but I do prefer bibs. I like the way bibs come up farther on my back so I can wear jerseys that tend to be shorter and not worry about plumbers butt (even though I'm a plumber :-).

I do find that bibs tend to be tighter in the crotch area caused, from what I can tell, by the straps. But I don't notice this when I'm riding, only when walking around....which I don't do a lot of in bibs.

Does anyone where these? They are some cheapies I found on ebay. Im looking for something that will last. I'm guessing like most other things in cycling its an investment and your better off in the long run dropping some more cash.
This listing is for a 3XL (Black fabric/yellow flatlock stitching)
which fits waist size 40" to 42" according to Falconi

Agreed. No plumbers crack, no waist lines, no dunlops disease and they're not much more expensive. I do wear shorts on the trainer sometimes mainly because I don't want to dirty a bib for what sometimes seems like a waste of time in the house. To each their own.

I guess I am biased towards shorts (in addition to not having the problem of them falling down on me) because women have very few options when it comes to bibs, and you best not have any boobs to speak of if you wear one of the few women's bibs out there.

Well I was riding with a couple of women in my club on a club ride, and they were shocked that bra cup sizes got bigger than DDD when we somehow got on the subject of buying bras., We can safely say I am most definitely not lacking in that department

Because men are messy eaters.

But yeah, bibs are nice because it doesn't squeeze your waist. That wasn't a big issue when I was young and had no fat. Now I don't like it when my stomach rolls over my waist band and pushes my shorts down every time I get in an aero tuck, so I wear bibs.

Your "front" chest? and "front" nipple area?... As opposed to what?... your back chest and back nipples??? That is not a "normal body build." No question... you are the minority.

I am agreement with the nipple thing [yeah mine are up front]. But I still would rather have bibs.

Solution = base layer under bibs. (works summer or winter)

Yeah, Base layers work in the winter but I would rather not use them in the summer.
