I can't believe no has mentioned the ever-popular:
"left hand on the tops, right hand under the jersey, inside the bibs, below the waist adjustment". Damn those hybrid cars for sneaking up and catching me in that pose... |

This doesn't make a lot of sense. That position with the elbows bent deep is intended to get you aero, similar to being in the drops. Riding a steep uphill, aerodynamics is mostly out the window, and you're better off sitting upright and breathing.

You know, I've done this a couple times (admittedly it's makes no sense on my part)... I think my brain would think, "hey, let's rest on the bars while we climb!" and I'll agree and a few seconds later wonder why I'm struggling to breath, shake my head, and get back up top.

Any other situation, that's a relaxing position. It's wrong in cycling as you mentioned, but I kinda think it's why I've gone in that position in the wrong situations. |

I'm more worried about the cycling ladies that catch me in that pose. I don't do that though, I just take the padding with my right hand and slide that untill mini-me is aligned again.
That's like cleaning up dog crap with a pooper-scooper: More socially acceptable, but not nearly as effective has digging your hands right into the meat of the situation. |
I can think of at least 6 different hand positions I use.

So it's not just me who occasionally shoves their hand down the front and has a good rummage whilst riding. Good to know. I was wondering if there was a more acceptable way to do it or not.
I do generally do it whist standing up though. |
