I have a few of these green slime tubing patches I picked up at the LBS. They are kind of like a sticker with the adhesive prepped on the patch, instead of in a tube.

I patched a pinhole leak a week ago, and it is still holding.

How long do these premade patches last? Do they last as long as the older kind that use the tube of glue?

I've used Parks and I like them. They won't last as long as the glued on patch but I've had them last for months.

I have "backup patches" in the hidden compartment of the handle of my minipump. They're self-adhesive patches. I've never used them. I guess I really don't trust them. You do have to be a bit more careful with them. Don't pre-inflate much because they're only supposed to remain fully sealed when they're pressed up against the inner casing of the tyre. I always carry regular patches with glue and don't think they take up that much more space nor am I usually in a particular hurry when I'm patching. I will usually swap in a spare tube that I always carry before I resort to patching.

Right now I have a glued-on patch on my rear tire and a glue-less patch on the front. (I ran out of glue last week and decided to try the glueless). Time will tell which one lasts the longest.

By the way, what's the closest to the stem that you can patch a tube? I have a tube that has a hole about 1/4 inch from the stem. can it be patched?

Folks I've talked to say that these are fine if they're not used on a high-pressure road bike tube. If you're using 80-90 psi, then use the traditional glue-on type!

An update:

Went to check my bike for tomorrow's ride. Front tire's flat. It was leaking where I put the patch. Went to the store for a new tube and an new patch kit. No more glue-less for me.
