Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Costco road bike

Hi,

I'm shopping for an entry level road bike and came accross the 'Infinity Geneva' road bike. The sub $500 price seems reasonable for the components...

https://www.costco.ca/Browse/Product....A&Sp=C&topnav=

Has anyone seen one of these up close? If so, what are your thoughts?

I have requested more information from the company regarding the frame etc.

Any input would be helpful.

Thx,

Jumbalaya

for the price, it's actually a pretty good deal.

But I'm unsure as to how fast the maintenance costs will rack up for prolonged periods of use.

the frame... well, what do you expect from a $480 bike?

I've seen that go for under $400 locally, but I think it was the end of season leftover.

Tiagra is pretty good stuff. I have one set of Tiagra with approx 12K trouble free miles. If it fits I would go for it for a starter. For that price point you get a pretty decent component group.

For a new bike with that component spec, you won't do much better. But it does require set up. Do you wrench yourself or know somebody you trust to set it up correctly?

BD doesn't ship to canada.

You have to ship it to a store just outside of canada, cross the border and collect it.

Holy flip, batman!

I actually remember seeing a sub $500 road bike w/tiagra components at a Costco here in the US quite a while ago, although I do not think it was the same brand. Still, some decent stuff.

i'm always the type to say save up another 200 bucks and get something known to be a better buy or shop around a bit more...

i know alot of us can't drop a $texas amount of cash on a first bike... but still... i wouldn't let any of my friends buy a bike without weighing they're options out carefully...

after looking around at performance and some other shops... you really can't get anything with those components unless you pay around 8 bills or so... wow... that is a deal...

In 2008 I bought my Trek 1.2T brand new for $600. I shopped around and checked out all of the shops I could, then I stumbled upon my current LBS which just happens to be right up the street from me. Best $600 I have spent. I have upgraded the wheels recently for $200, and I am thinking about throwing a SRAM Rival groupo on there. I absolutely love the frame, the geometry and the look. If you can find an LBS with a deal on last year's model, you might be able to get a reasonable deal that way as well.

Does it fit?
They usually only have one size with these deals.
A bike that doesn't fit is no bargain at any price.

I would spend 2-300 more and get an entry level like from a bike shop.

About 2 months ago, this same Infinity Geneva was going for $349! Those Tiagra STi costs 1/3 of the entire bike's price! Amazing. Too bad I missed that sale. I would've gotten it as a parts bike.

Exactly what I was going to suggest. If, and only if, the bike fits, then perhaps you could buy it and ride it for a year. If at that point you decide to plunge into more road cycling, take those parts and upgrade to a new frame.

If the fit isn't great, go for the entry-level road bike from your LBS for +/- $200 more.

The components are worth like $350.

What is up with those handlebars though? They look really low.

+1

They don't provide any information on the frame geometry either, just dimensions that don't really help unless you're measuring how much of a footprint it will take up in your house/apartment.

They're just rotated a bit low. Clearly the bike wasn't assembled by someone who knows bikes - it'd look like any other cheap road bike with the bars at the right angle.

For $500 bucks you could probably find something with a little better component mix on CL, that you could keep and easily upgrade later...

Here are a couple around that price on CL in Montreal... dont know your size:
