You seem to be starting a lot of threads.
It depends on what you want. A Cannondale CAAD9 4 will give you a good groupset (Rival) and a great aluminum frame. You'll also have some money for wheels.
If you want the most amount of components for the price... go with BD or Neuvations Cycling like I've mentioned.
Really though CAAD9 4 is going to be fast and good enough.

something from focus bikes, that BMC team machine deal on competitive cyclist looks pretty good, too

That's a difficult question. What are you looking for, top of the line components, average components + nicer frame, etc. I would say pick out the frame you want first, and then decide on the lowest level groupset you're willing to live with and go from there. Groupsets can always be upgraded.

I just bought a CAAD9-5 and had money to get a pair of shoes that fit great and pedals im impressed with (bontrager race road shoes and shimano 105 pedals) for a total of 1903. there was a 20% discount on the shoes and pedals and the kit that came with the bike (spare tube/some co2 carts./multi tool/tire removing tools/saddle bag). that's what i did with my 2 g's

I went a different route and built up a bike. Total cost was about $1200 and I'm left with a very nice 18 pound road bike equipped with SRAM Rival. However I spent probably a good two months of waiting to gather parts.

the best bike <2000 is the one you have right now. forget your delusional dream to sell a nice bike and buy two lesser ones, it wont make you a hero or a family man, if you really must have a mountain bike save your pennies and buy one later.

I have the same question. I'll be in the market for a new bike in a month or so and have about the same budget. I'm thinking about an S1, CAAD9, maybe building up a Soul Faith frame and I'm thinking about this: https://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/b/q/...ro-carbon-comp. The latter seems a little too good to be true though so I'm weary of it.

I bought my 2010 Specialized Tarmac Elite last August for $1850. I'm happy with the bike, and you'll have money left over for pedals, etc.

stole your bike
These kind of general questions get tedious because there are many variables which determine what's the "best bike" for any price range. The best question to answer is what is the best bike for you based on fit, intended purpose, desired frame material, and gruppo.

I was looking at the same price range and, for me, it came down to the 2010 Cannondale Six Carbon 5 and the Jamis Xenith Comp. I ended up finding a good deal on the Xenith Comp and I'm very happy with it... of course, this is my first road bike, so take it with a grain of salt.

If you plan on going downhill, you'll need a downhill bike. If you plan on going uphill, you'll need an uphill bike. If you plan on doing both, you'll need both bikes.
I would adjust your budget and allocate $850 for the downhill bike, $850 for the uphill bike, and $300 for the trailer used to tow the downhill bike when you're going uphill and vise versa.

I'm curious if you have Rival all around, and how you got there for $1200 total. Can you break it down and give some tips for building up quality for cheap? I'm ready to build up a frame soon, and I had planned to buy a BD bike and cannibalize it. It sounds like you have a better plan. thanks
