Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where to use my road bike in Washington D.C.?

I'll be spending the summer in D.C., and I just bought my first road bike about 2 months ago. I like the 'train and become a badass' part of road biking, but I'd really like to use it this summer to see all I can see of this place and enjoy my time here.

Where are the coolest trails? Where are the best rides? I want to know everything. Help me, folks.

Anywhere, except obviously it's highly trafficked. There are lots of bike paths, but they don't really show you much as far as the historic side of the city. The mount vernon and W&OD trails are great for getting a view of the city from either the Virginia side or along the edge of the city. I don't know of any bicycle tours, I'd just ride the city and explore. Metro is great too.

Look on the bright side, at least you have a lot of great museums and bars.

The DC area is home to one of the country's largest bike clubs, PPTC. They have their various routes (of which there are a LOT) online: https://www.bikepptc.org/cuesheets/library. You'll need to get outside the city for most of them though.

Mt. Weather. Decent climbing ride/route
Check out Reston Bike Club for their weekday impromptu rides as well as their weekend rides.

Here's a sample of D.C. rides at MapMyRide. Also Hains Point is a good location and getting there can be fun if you ride along the mall.

The riding is better outside of DC than in it. Ride out MacArthur Blvd. towards Potomac, MD or Poolesville and you've got some great routes. RudeSiggy (forum member) might have some links to cue sheets.
