Appendectomy

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Appendectomy

I had my appendix removed via laparoscopic surgery Saturday night. My recovery is going well with most of the soreness gone already. My surgeon said I could ease back into regular activity as soon as I started feeling better. I am just curious what others who had uncomplicated appendectomies may have experienced and how long it took to get back to your old riding routine?

I was in pain for about a week after my surgery. It was weird because the pain from the surgery itself went away after 2 days but after that moving around would hurt because of the fresh stitches. I would say to not get back on the bike until the wound has fully closed because it would suck to have to get restitched.

I had my gallbladder removed with the same type of surgery. I waited until the Dr. took off the bandages and staples before cycling, even though I was really dying to go riding. I think that was about 2 weeks after the operation. I'm glad I waited because the first time out again I crashed.

My worry is not that you will need to get restitched, but develop a hernia at the site. So try to take it easy until it fully heals!

Yep, take a little extra time. Mine got infected about a week after the initial surgery. Several followup in office procedures (least fun thing I have ever done), then it herniated a few weeks later. Not much fun, and I was out of exercise for two months. If it feels good, give it a little extra time just in case. I would wait till the stitches get taken out or dissolve and work themselves out, depending on which type you have. An extra week or so off sucks, but it sucks a lot less than an incision that gets infected from sweating on the bike. Because then it has to get cut open again. And cleaned out with those really long dental swabs. For an hour and a half.

I had the smoothest, most uncomplicated appendectomy ever. Doctor said I could ride in a couple days if I felt up to it, but if I crashed and popped an internal stitch I'd be really sorry. I waited a week and started slow but it was not an issue.
